HMAT A16 Star of Victoria

 

1st Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, Headquarters Section, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A16 Star of Victoria 20 October 1914.

The HMAT A16 Star of Victoria, later renamed Port Melbourne, weighed 9,152 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd London and leased by the Commonwealth until 2 October 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

36 Private Bruce Tasman BARNES, a 24 year old Bank Teller from Drummoyne, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 30 January 1918.

9 Farrier Quartermaster Sergeant Job BERRIMAN, a 38 year old Farrier from Paddington, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 13 October 1918.

14 Driver Edwin Albert Ernest BROWN, a 28 year old Mattress maker from Hurstville, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 13 October 1918.

56 Sergeant Saddler Sylvester Henry BROWNE, a 27 year old Traveller from Croydon, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 November 1918.

 

30 Private William Thomas CLARK, a 23 year old Groom from Duntroon, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 October 1918.

538 Signaller Edward William COBCROFT, a 22 year old Telegraphist from Coonamble, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 9 February 1916.

12 Signaller Stanley Robert CRICHTON, a 22 year old Clerk from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 26 September 1915.

 

15 Private John Gibson DAVIDSON, a 24 year old Labourer from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 7 June 1918.

1 Armourer Sergeant James Frederick DAWES, a 37 year old Gunsmith fitter from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 February 1915.

 

5 Sergeant Trumpeter Leslie Shaw ELLIOTT, a 29 year old Stock exporter from Dulwich Hill, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 August 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 3 May 1916.

19 Driver John Lewis Spencer ELLIS, a 37 year old Engineer from Waverley, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 2 September 1916.

 

20 Signaller Desmond Brereton FITZGERALD, a 22 year old Station Overseer from Wollongong, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 July 1918.

Second Lieutenant Albert Leslie FITZPATRICK, a 27 year old Soldier from Dulwich Hill, New South Wales. He enlisted on 27 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 September 1916.

Captain Alexander Young FULLERTON, a 49 year old Doctor from North Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 7 November 1915.

 

308A Corporal Gordon Escort GABRIEL, a 26 year old Engineer Student from Petersham, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 16 November 1918.

11 Private William GARNER, a 21 year old Labourer from North Fremantle, Western Australia. He enlisted on 8 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 December 1915.

309A Private Bruce Campbell GILLIES, a 21 year old Clerk from Gunnedah, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 February 1915.

 

39 Private Charles HODSON, a 21 year old Farmer from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 14 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 December 1918.

Second Lieutenant Richard Dudley HOLMAN, a 23 year old Soldier, Australian Instructional Staff from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 17 March 1917.

17 Private William HOWARD, a 35 year old Miner from Rozelle, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 December 1915.

 

7 Private Jeffries JAMES, a 21 year old Labourer Driver from Newtown, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 28 January 1919.

 

21 Driver Leslie Austin KIMBALL, a 22 year old Farmer from Albury, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 November 1918.

35 Private George Shadrick KING, a 30 year old Jockey from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 20 December 1918.

 

40 Private James Urquhart LEASK, an 18 year old Clerk from Cremorne, New South Wales. He enlisted on 11 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 30 August 1918.

1 Warrant Officer 2nd Class Frederick William LINDSELL, a 45 year old Soldier, Australian Instructional Staff from Randwick, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 April 1918.

 

29 Private Michael McGILLAN, a 39 year old Labourer from RMC Duntroon, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 April 1918.

Lieutenant Colonel John Baldwin Hoystead MEREDITH, a 50 year old Doctor from Raymond Terrace, New South Wales. He enlisted on 28 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 November 1917.

26 Driver Edward William MORRIS, a 27 year old Powder monkey from West Wyalong, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 August 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 9 June 1917.

42 Private George William MURPHY, a 41 year old Labourer from Pyrmont, New South Wales. He enlisted on 1 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 28 April 1915.

 

18 Signaller Arthur Wellesley OAKES, an 18 year old Accountant from Cremorne, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

Provisional Captain Henry Oswald OLIVER, a 38 year old Veterinary Surgeon from North Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 20 August 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 20 August 1918.

 

23 Driver Alfred PARKER, a 32 year old Miner from Helensburgh, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 4 June 1919.

499 Driver William PENNELL, a 23 year old Coach driver from Mudgee, New South Wales. He enlisted on 28 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 27 August 1915.

150 Private William Thomas POILE, a 33 year old Farmer from Nelsons Plains, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 December 1918.

151 Sergeant Cook Alfred Thomas POOLE, a 20 year old Farmer from Nelsons Plains, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 August 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 20 August 1915.

34 Private William PURCELL, a 28 year old Labourer from Inverell, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 July 1916.

 

38 Private Eric Goodwin RIDDETT, a 19 year old Telephone mechanic from Sth Kensington, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 August 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 21 August 1919.

310A Private Frederick Herbert RYE, a 25 year old Clerk from North Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 28 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 April 1918.

 

6 Orderly Room Sergeant Dudley Hobart SARGENT, a 34 year old Clerk from Mosman, New South Wales. He enlisted on 28 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 24 September 1918.

156 Private Walter Huntley SCOTT, a 25 year old Dentist from Moree, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 26 December 1918.

31 Batman Frederick Thomas SUMNER, a 38 year old Motor driver from RMC Duntroon, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 September 1916.

 

37 Private Edward Sheppard TOMKINS, a 40 year old Auctioneer from Moore Park, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 July 1916.

457 Signaller James Hamilton TRAILL, a 20 year old Station hand from Cassilis, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 November 1918.

 

Major Hugh Venables Jnr VERNON, a 37 year old Soldier and Architect from Turromurri, New South Wales. He enlisted on 27 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 October 1918.

 

41 Staff Sergeant Major Walter John WARNEFORD, a 31 year old Soldier from South Randwick, New South Wales. He enlisted on 26 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 September 1918.

2 Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant Henry Gunning WEBB, a 38 year old Soldier, Australian Instructional Staff from Albion Park, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 April 1916.

 

8 Bugler Sergeant Frederick Richard Charles YOUNG, a 27 year old Plumber from Goulburn, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.
