HMAT A70 Ballarat

 

4th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 10th Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A70 Ballarat 9 September 1915.

The HMAT A70 Ballarat weighed 11,120 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the P & O SN Co, London. The Ballarat was torpedoed by a submarine in the English Channel, 25 April 1917 and sank the next day.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

The last address as a civilian;

1304 Private Bert BODDISON, a 19 year old Engineer from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 22 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 26 January 1919.

 

1354 Private Archibald Hugh CAMERON, a 25 year old Grazier from Condah, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 March 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 14 April 1918.

1307 Private Edward Lawrence CARMODY, a 22 year old Farmer from South Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 June 1919.

1308 Private Arthur CLAPP, a 21 year old Farmer from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 December 1918.

1312 Private William Alfred DRURY, a 23 year old Farmer from Berriwillock, Victoria. He enlisted on 2 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 31 July 1918.

A note on copyright

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors. The information on this site is freely available for private research use only and if used as such, should be appropriately acknowledged. To assist in this process, each item has a citation attached at the bottom for referencing purposes.
