HMAT A18 Wiltshire

 

The General Service Reinforcements, 3rd GSR, Queensland, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board the HMAT A18 Wiltshire 10 June 1918.

The HMAT A18 Wiltshire weighed 10,390 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 2 October 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

56904 Private Richard William BARKER, a 41 year old Commercial Traveller from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 25 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 19 January 1919.

56901 Private Arthur BEAUMONT, a 19 year old Orchardist from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and subsequently Returned to Australia 9 December 1918.

53211 Private Arthur John BEESTON, a 20 year old Bank Clerk from Corinda, Queensland. He enlisted on 24 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 9th Infantry Battalion; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 18 July 1919.

56903 Private Herbert Fletcher BUSHFIELD, a 34 year old Fireman from Caboolture, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and subsequently was Discharged in Britain 15 October 1919.

 

56906 Private William George Arthur COLEBROOK, an 18 year old Carpenter from Cooroy, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 26 July 1919.

56907 Private Fredrick COOLWELL, a 19 year old Labourer from Toowong, Queensland. He enlisted on 22 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

56905 Private James Alfred COTTAM, a 30 year old Carter from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 17 July 1919.

56909 Private Aubrey Edward Upton COTTRELL-DORMER, a 19 year old Jackeroo from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 22 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

53221 Private Thomas Duncan CUNNINGHAM, an 18 year old Labourer from South Tumbulgum, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 9th Infantry Battalion; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 May 1919.

56908 Private John CURRIE, an 18 year old Miner from Maryborough, Queensland. He enlisted on 22 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

 

53229 Acting Corporal Ernest John DALTON, a 21 year old Clerk from Kingaroy, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 25 September 1919.

 

56929 Private Ronald Fraser GALLOWAY, a 20 year old Postal worker from Bulimba, Queensland. He enlisted on 4 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

56910 Private James Robert GRAHAM, a 29 year old Clerk from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

 

56911 Private William Henry HEDGES, a 19 year old Farm hand from Helidon, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 16 May 1919.

56913 Private Frank Cameron HUGHES, a 27 year old Grazier from Maryborough, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 5th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 June 1919.

56912 Private James HURLEY, a 26 year old Farmer from Enoggera, Queensland. He enlisted on 5 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 5th Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 2 August 1919.

 

56914 Private Eric Ronald INGLIS, a 19 year old Jackeroo from Ilfracombe, Queensland. He enlisted on 22 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

 

56915 Private Henry Richard KERRIGAN, a 44 year old Traveller from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 January 1919.

 

56917 Private Kenneth Allan LANG, a 21 year old Grazier from Jimbour, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

56918 Private Walter James LEWIS, a 19 year old Stud groom from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and subsequently was Killed in Action 25 September 1918.

56919 Private William Arthur LITTLE, a 20 year old Carpenter from Ipswich, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

56916 Private George LOCKYER, a 22 year old Carter from Red Hill, Queensland. He enlisted on 27 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 29 April 1919.

 

56930 Private Stanley Gordon MAXWELL, an 18 year old Labourer from Newrybar via Bangalow, New South Wales. He enlisted on 6 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

53285 Private Alan Richard McIVER, an 18 year old Farmer from Nanango, Queensland. He enlisted on 5 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 9th Infantry Battalion; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 22 July 1919.

56920 Private Ernest MEAD, an 18 year old Stockman from Charters towers, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 January 1919.

 

56921 Private Kevin Sarsfield O'SULLIVAN, a 23 year old Article Surveyor from Charters Towers, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

 

56923 Private Bertie REED, a 30 year old Labourer from Bourke, New South Wales. He enlisted on 27 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Discharged 29 April 1919.

56922 Private Wylie Norman RENAUD, a 19 year old Groom from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

56924 Private Pompey ROBERTS, a 30 year old Stockman from Dalby, Queensland. He enlisted on 29 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 2 August 1919.

56925 Private Charles Albert ROGERS, a 21 year old Farm labourer from Pomona, Queensland. He enlisted on 4 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 17 July 1919.

 

56932 Private Joseph Henry SCHUMACHER, a 21 year old Miner from Cairns, Queensland. He enlisted on 30 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

53264 Private Augustus Lionel SMITH, a 22 year old Engine driver from Mt Marshall via Allora, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 9 December 1919.

56926 Private George Edward SMITH, a 19 year old Labourer from Dalby, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

56931 Private John Ernest STILL, a 29 year old Storeman from Cairns, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

56928 Private Eugene STUBBERSFIELD, a 22 year old Engineer from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 14 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 20 July 1919.

A note on copyright

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors. The information on this site is freely available for private research use only and if used as such, should be appropriately acknowledged. To assist in this process, each item has a citation attached at the bottom for referencing purposes.
