HMAT A63 Karoola

 

5th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 6th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A63 Karoola 12 June 1915.

The HMAT A63 Karoola weighed 7,391 tons with an average cruise speed of 15 knots or 27.78 kmph. It was owned by the McIlwraith, McEacharn's Line Pty Ltd, Melbourne, and manned by Australian officers and crews. The Karoola was leased by the Commonwealth until June 1919.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier;

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1005 Private Waler Rothwell ARCHIBALD, a 22 year old Station hand from Warrnambool, Victoria. He enlisted on 26 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 7 November 1919.

1003 Private George Walter ARMSTRONG, a 37 year old Labourer from Murwillumbah, New South Wales. He enlisted on 28 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 27 June 1919.

1002 Private Richard Arthur ASH, a 30 year old Labourer from Narrabri, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 24 July 1919.

Lieutenant Leslie Thomas ATKINSON, a 38 year old Merchant from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 20 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 26 July 1919.

1004 Private Joseph AUSTIN, a 30 year old Labourer from South Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 25 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 21 January 1919.

 

1008 Private George Henry BOTT, a 21 year old Farmer from Biggenden, Queensland. He enlisted on 19 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 21 March 1919.

1007 Private Eric BROWN, a 21 year old Plumber from Mayne Junction, Queensland. He enlisted on 19 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1010 Private Edward BURNS, a 29 year old Stockman from Urana, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 22 November 1918.

1009 Private Thomas Frederick BURRELL, a 23 year old Carpenter from Eumundi, Queensland. He enlisted on 20 January 1915; and subsequently was Discharged, 30 October 1919.

 

1011 Acting Sergeant John CHRISTIANSEN, a 21 year old Policeman from Bulimba, Queensland. He enlisted on 14 January 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 22 November 1915.

1053 Private Benjamin James COCKERILL, a 37 year old Stockman from Charters Towers, Queensland. He enlisted on 6 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 January 1917.

1012 Acting Corporal Arthur Albert CROZIER, a 27 year old Dairy farmer from South Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 21 March 1919.

 

1013 Private John Thornton DANCOCKS, a 39 year old Miner from Casterton, Victoria. He enlisted on 11 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 22 January 1917.

1060 Private Patrick DELANEY, a 22 year old Labourer from Gooroolba, Queensland. He enlisted on 20 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1054 Private Thomas William DOWNIE, a 30 year old Clerk from Stewarts Creek, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 23 March 1919.

1014 Private Frederick DROCKMAN, a 23 year old Labourer from Rockhampton, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

 

1058 Private Alwyne ELLIOTT, a 19 year old Pastoralist from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 5 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 May 1916.

 

1015 Acting Corporal Benjamin FELMINGHAM, a 21 year old Engine driver from Milton, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

1063 Private Charles Stuart FERGUSON, a 30 year old Labourer from Mitchell, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 January 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 25 February 1919.

 

1016 Private John Bennett GALLIGAN, a 40 year old Electrician from Goodna, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 January 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 26 March 1917.

1057 Private Wilfred Holland GILBEY, a 27 year old Grazier from Dalby, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 30 October 1919.

 

1017 Acting Corporal Charles David HADFIELD, a 32 year old Shearing mechanic from Strathfield, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 9 July 1919.

A note on copyright

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors. The information on this site is freely available for private research use only and if used as such, should be appropriately acknowledged. To assist in this process, each item has a citation attached at the bottom for referencing purposes.
