HMAT A70 Ballarat

 

13th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 5th Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A70 Ballarat 9 September 1915.

The HMAT A70 Ballarat weighed 11,120 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the P & O SN Co, London. The Ballarat was torpedoed by a submarine in the English Channel, 25 April 1917 and sank the next day.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1066 Private Walter Augustus AYRES, a 29 year old Labourer from North Carlton, Victoria. He enlisted on 31 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 25 May 1920.

 

1070 Private Samuel Ernest CARLYON, a 22 year old Shunter from East Ballarat, Victoria. He enlisted on 22 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 8 April 1919.

1073 Private Hugh Robert CARR, a 25 year old Painter from Footscray, Victoria. He enlisted on 11 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 December 1918.

1072 Private Arthur Francis CLEMENTS, a 22 year old Carpenter from Richmond, Victoria. He enlisted on 27 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 April 1919.

 

1116 Private Henry James GIBSON, a 40 year old Storeman from Highlands via Yea, Victoria. He enlisted on 20 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 April 1919.

1075 Private Percy GORDON, a 23 year old Horseman from Moonlight Hill, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 4 December 1918.

1074 Private Cyril Laurie GRIFFITHS, a 23 year old Labourer from East Brunswick, Victoria. He enlisted on 7 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.

 

1079 Private Henry HAAR, a 30 year old Labourer from Elsternwick, Victoria. He enlisted on 17 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 April 1919.

1077 Private Thomas Richard HANSON, a 24 year old Baker from Perth, Western Australia. He enlisted on 9 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 April 1918.

1082 Private Henry Leslie HARDY, a 20 year old Rail worker from North Wallacedale, Victoria. He enlisted on 11 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 January 1919.

1083 Acting Corporal James Scouler HARGRAVE, a 27 year old Engineer from Dubbo, New South Wales. He enlisted on 15 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 22 July 1919.

1084 Private William Herbert HEPPELL, a 23 year old Farmer from Larpent, Victoria. He enlisted on 13 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 25 January 1919.

1080 Private William James HINDGE, a 36 year old Timber worker from East Thornbury, Victoria. He enlisted on 16 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.

1085 Acting Corporal Harold Maxwell HUDSON, a 27 year old Bank Clerk from North Ballarat, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 November 1919.

1081 Private George HUMPHRIES, a 36 year old Contractor from Yannathan, Victoria. He enlisted on 4 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 May 1918.

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors.
