HMAT A16 Star of Victoria

 

8th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, Regimental Headquarters Section, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A16 Star Of Victoria 25 February 1915.

The HMAT A16 Star of Victoria, later renamed Port Melbourne, weighed 9,152 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd London and leased by the Commonwealth until 2 October 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

36 Private John BLUNDELL, a 21 year old Gem Cutter from Essendon, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 October 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 28 June 1915.

24 Private Herbert Boyle BROWNE, a 32 year old Engine driver from Caulfield, Victoria. He enlisted on 22 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 January 1916.

 

10 Signaller Auburn Douglas CALLOW, an 18 year old Assistant Veterinary Surgeon from Ballarat, Victoria. He enlisted on 8 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 9 January 1920.

Dr Captain Sydney James CAMPBELL, a 27 year old Doctor from Portland, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 November 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 14 July 1915, and subsequently was buried at sea.

Captain Adjutant Joseph Terrell CROWL, a 31 year old Auctioneer from Port Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 21 September 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 27 June 1915.

 

21 Private William Walter DANIEL, a 26 year old Horse Trainer from Clifton Creek via Bairnsdale, Victoria. He enlisted on 11 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 July 1918.

 

28 Private Michael Thomas FARRELL, a 21 year old Butcher from Garvoc, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 September 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 5 June 1918.

920 Corporal John Tennyson FLOCKHART, a 21 year old Uni Student from West Geelong, Victoria. He enlisted on 2 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 July 1917.

Lieutenant Quartermaster Hubert Leslie FRY, a 33 year old Merchant from Brighton, Victoria. He enlisted on 16 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 13 December 1915.

 

1 Regimental Sergeant Major Arthur Samuel GILMAN, a 40 year old Soldier from Benalla, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 5 June 1916.

23 Private Albert John GRAY, a 27 year old Jockey from Camperdown, Victoria. He enlisted on 31 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 29 August 1915.

11 Signaller Ernest William Llewellyn GRIFFITHS, a 21 year old Clerk from Lake Boga, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 31 October 1915.

621 Private Mansell David GRIFFITHS, a 22 year old Labourer from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 9 November 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

33 Driver Richard Joseph GROVES, a 26 year old Labourer from Hobart, Tasmania. He enlisted on 11 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 June 1919.

12 Signaller Charles William GUYATT, a 22 year old Labourer from Waterloo, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

 

17 Signaller Robert John Arnold HENDERSON, an 18 year old Medical Student from Malvern, Victoria. He enlisted on 19 October 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 17 April 1919.

32 Driver Leslie Charles HENRY, a 20 year old Labourer from Echuca, Victoria. He enlisted on 18 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 March 1919.

34 Driver William HOSSACK, a 34 year old Horse breaker from Tatura, Victoria. He enlisted on 19 October 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 June 1919.

 

29 Driver William Herbert JOHNS, a 21 year old Labourer from Echuca, Victoria. He enlisted on 17 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 11 October 1920.

25 Private George William JONES, a 40 year old Labourer from Maldon, Victoria. He enlisted on 10 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 April 1916.

 

30 Driver Charles Kempson KIRKBY, a 24 year old Labourer from Windsor, Victoria. He enlisted on 18 September 1914; and subsequently Died of Disease, 26 February 1919.

 

4 Orderly Room Staff Sergeant Ewan Francis MacLEAN, a 31 year old Teacher from Sale, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 2 August 1919.

14 Private James Riddle MacPHERSON, a 19 year old Labourer from Branxholme, Victoria. He enlisted on 13 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 September 1915.

3 Trumpeter Sergeant Patrick John MALONE, a 35 year old Moulder from North Richmond, Victoria. He enlisted on 28 November 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 February 1919.

921 Private Thomas Anthony OLIPHANT, a 20 year old Medical Student from East St Kilda, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 August 1916.

 

435 Sergeant Cook Walter Lucas Dillon PARKER, a 34 year old Horse shipper from Williamstown, Victoria. He enlisted on 22 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 March 1916.
