HMAT A54 Runic

 

8th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 1st Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A54 Runic 25 February 1915.

The HMAT A54 Runic weighed 12,490 tons with an average cruise speed of 13 knots or 24.07 kmph. It was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd, Liverpool, and leased by the Commonwealth until 27 November 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

609 Private Edgar John APPLEYARD, a 24 year old Labourer from Alberton, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 October 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 3 August 1917.

 

673 Private Edward Madden BAWDEN, a 23 year old Fitter from West Coburg, Victoria. He enlisted on 4 November 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 9 August 1916.

601 Private Charles BENSON, a 38 year old Baker from Windsor, Victoria. He enlisted on 10 November 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

664 Private Vernon Keyworth BOYNTON, a 22 year old Grazier from Balranald, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 9 February 1916.

665 Private Bernard Warner BRIGGS, a 24 year old Station hand from Swan Hill, Victoria. He enlisted on 25 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 17 August 1916.

602 Private George Owen BRUCE, a 39 year old Ware houseman from Emerald Hill, Victoria. He enlisted on 20 August 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 19 July 1916.

 

611 Private George Jacob CANTIENI, a 25 year old Labourer from Jamieson, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 December 1917.

612 Private William CLARIDGE, a 21 year old Carpenter from Stawell, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 November 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 March 1919.

613 Private Michael COONERTY, a 23 year old Labourer from Yarragon, Victoria. He enlisted on 21 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

 

668 Private Frederick James DOYLE, a 26 year old Drover and shearer from Uralla, New South Wales. He enlisted on 1 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

614 Private Percy DRISCOLL, a 21 year old Stockman from St Kilda, Victoria. He enlisted on 18 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 8 May 1919.

662 Private James DUFFY, a 36 year old Labourer from Stawell, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 December 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

 

615 Private Albert Edward EASTMAN, a 19 year old Labourer from Maryborough, Victoria. He enlisted on 16 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 July 1917.

617 Private William EDWARDS, a 28 year old Miner from Walhalla, Victoria. He enlisted on 19 October 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 25 January 1919.

618 Private Wallace ESSAY, a 22 year old Station hand from Kensington, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 October 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

 

672 Private Charles FITZPATRICK, a 24 year old Labourer from Woomelang, Victoria. He enlisted on 24 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

620 Private Reginald Patrick FRASER, a 19 year old Farmer from Monbulk, Victoria. He enlisted on 19 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 October 1919.

 

670 Private Joseph Henry HILL, a 25 year old Painter from Brunswick, Victoria. He enlisted on 29 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 29 July 1915.

622 Private William Sydney HINDS, a 19 year old Orchardist from Warncoort, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 October 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 4 October 1917.

He enlisted on 17 September 1914; but Returned to Australia 29 July 1915 and re-embarked with 9th LHR, 11th Reinforcements. He failed to embark at Fremantle and subsequently was Discharged in Australia, 22 December 1915.

 

624 Private Robert Conrice LETHBRIDGE, a 28 year old Farmer from Sunbury, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 22 January 1917.

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors.
