HMAT A19 Afric

 

9th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 13th Reinforcement Afric Group, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A19 Afric 5 January 1916.

The HMAT A19 Afric weighed 11,999 tons with an average cruise speed of 13 knots or 24.07 kmph. It was owned by the Federal SN Co Ltd, London. The Afric was torpedoed and sunk in the English Chanel, 12 February 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1782 Private William Joseph ALLAN, a 21 year old Sailor from Geelong, Victoria. He enlisted on 24 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 November 1918.

1783 Private Allen Richard APPLEYARD, a 22 year old Labourer from Alberton, Victoria. He enlisted on 28 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 19 April 1919.

 

1788 Private Thomas Patrick BRASZELL, a 19 year old Labourer from North Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 19 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 24 July 1919.

1836 Private Clifford Joseph BROWN, a 21 year old Blacksmith from Torrensville, South Australia. He enlisted on 4 October 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 September 1919.

1826 Private Herbert John BUTTERS, a 29 year old Jockey from Sunbury, Victoria. He enlisted on 21 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

 

1821 Private William Stanley CANNAN, a 20 year old Labourer from Eaglehawk, Victoria. He enlisted on 20 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

1822 Private Thomas James CARPENTER, a 20 year old Labourer from Welshpool, Victoria. He enlisted on 20 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

1827 Private Henry Robert COOK, a 29 year old Labourer from South Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 21 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 May 1919.

 

1790 Private Frederick Charles DIX, a 20 year old Labourer from Fryers Town, Victoria. He enlisted on 8 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 September 1919.

 

1791 Private Percy Leonard ELLSWORTH, a 20 year old Farmer from Sebastopol, Victoria. He enlisted on 7 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 September 1919.

 

1792 Private George Leslie FAITHFULL, a 25 year old Labourer from The Rock, Victoria. He enlisted on 27 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

1793 Private Frederick Herbert FURZE, a 21 year old Farmer from Nathalie, Victoria. He enlisted on 17 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 September 1919.

 

1551 Private Martin HERREEN, a 32 year old Farmer from Payneham, South Australia. He enlisted on 16 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 18 January 1919.

1795 Private Thomas HUGHES, a 19 year old Hairdresser from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 June 1919.

1797 Private Ingram HUMPHREY, a 25 year old Farm Labourer from Milawa, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

1798 Private James Frederick HUMPHREY, a 27 year old Labourer from Milawa, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

 

1799 Private Thomas Grant JELLIS, a 23 year old Watchmaker from Kew, Victoria. He enlisted on 17 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 April 1919.

1800 Private Charles Harold JOHNS, a 24 year old Rail worker from Echuca, Victoria. He enlisted on 25 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 7 February 1919.

 

1802 Private William KEENAN, a 20 year old Labourer from Allans Flat via Wodonga, Victoria. He enlisted on 27 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 9 December 1918.

 

1803 Private James Maxwell LAIDLAW, a 28 year old Farmer from Geelong, Victoria. He enlisted on 20 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 May 1919.

1804 Private Norman Francis LAWRY, a 21 year old Engineer from Highton, Victoria. He enlisted on 7 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 May 1919.

 

1898 Private Hugh Cameron MacMILLAN, a 23 year old Auctioneer from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 4 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 1 March 1918.

1807 Private Angus McMASTER, an 18 year old Rail worker from Scarsdale, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 October 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 31 July 1917.

1805 Private Clive Ellerslie MINCHIN, a 21 year old Farmer from Cowwarr, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 May 1919.

 

1599 Private Thomas ROCHE, an 18 year old Labourer from Mortana, South Australia. He enlisted on 13 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

 

1809 Acting Corporal Frank Frederick SEATON, a 19 year old Grocer from Brighton, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 July 1915; and subsequently was Discharged in Britain, 5 November 1919.

1810 Private Arthur Townsend SHERWIN, a 26 year old Bank accountant from Cargo, New South Wales. He enlisted on 23 September 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 24 June 1916.

1886 Private Leonard Hendran SMITH, an 18 year old Clerk from Glanville, South Australia. He enlisted on 17 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 May 1919.

1812 Private Lewis STRAWHORN, a 21 year old Teacher from Edgecombe, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 October 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 December 1918.

1813 Private George SWANSON, a 21 year old Farmer from Moira Siding, New South Wales. He enlisted on 30 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 May 1919.

 

1814 Private James TANSEY, a 20 year old Labourer from North Ballarat, Victoria. He enlisted on 30 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 12 May 1919.

1825 Private Arthur Stuart THOMPSON, a 23 year old Hairdresser from Camperdown, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 April 1918.

 

Lieutenant Alexander Joseph WATT, a 24 year old Gardener from Wirrabara, South Australia. He enlisted on 29 November 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 30 August 1918.

1817 Private Frederick Bayley WATTS, a 19 year old Farm Labourer from Ballarat, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 19 August 1919.

1819 Private Glen Cairn WILSON, a 22 year old Farmhand from Ballarat, Victoria. He enlisted on 22 July 1915; and subsequently Deserted, 3 January 1917.
