"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre aims to present an accurate history as chroniclers of early Australian military developments from 1899 to 1920.

South African (Second Boer) War: 1899-1902, Embarkation Roll: FOS to FYF
Topic: BW - Boer War

South African (Second Boer) War, 1899-1902

Australian Participation - Full Index

Embarkation Roll: FOS to FYF

The following is an alphabetical roll of all Australians known members of the many military formations which embarked overseas during the South African (Second Boer) War, 1899-1902.

Each man is detailed on this reference list with the following information:

Service Number;

Rank on Embarkation;

First Names;

Family Name;

If applicable, any false name employed; and,

Service unit.

Notes

Note 1: All soldiers’ names are linked to the specific unit and date when embarkation occurred.

Note 2: There are duplications of some names in the following list. The reason for this is that the soldier embarked on more than one occasion. This was the simplest way of resolving the problem of multiple entries for a single individual.

New South Wales Infantry Contingent

Nominal Roll

In 1911, Lieutenant-Colonel P. L. Murray, produced a marvellous Boer War reference detailing all the contingents sent from Australia to South Africa, giving a brief history of the formation and finally, listing all the soldiers who saw service in South Africa with that unit. The book was called, Official Records of the Australian Military Contingents to the War in South Africa. It is now the standard reference and starting place for any person interested in pursuing information about Australian involvement in the Boer War.

Recruitment of the Infantry Contingent

Men from the 6th (Australian Rifles) Infantry Regiment

(Town & Country Journal, 4 November 1899, p. 24.)

When it was announced that New South Wales was to send a contingent of infantry to South Africa, the seven Infantry Regiments were asked to supply a total of a hundred fully trained men. Since the number of recruits required was exceedingly small and the number of men wishing to apply was in the range of 20 to one available position, the officials were in the enviable position of sending the best men that was possible at the time. Competition was so fierce that acceptance sometimes was finally judged upon the number of parades a person attended, all things being equal.

The following list gives an idea as to the spread of men from different regiments. This list consists of the Nominal Roll as it was drafted on 2 November 1899 prior to embarkation. It details the originating Regiment and rank of each individual member of the Contingent and then places it with the new Service Number and rank obtained for service in the Contingent.
