"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre aims to present an accurate history as chroniclers of early Australian military developments from 1899 to 1920.

Embarkation Roll: DUN to DYS

The following is an alphabetical roll of all members of the Australian Light Horse, AIF who are known to have embarked overseas during the Great War.

Each man is detailed on this reference list with the following information:

First Names;

Family Name;

If applicable, any false name employed; and,

Embarkation unit.

Notes

Note 1: All soldiers’ names are linked to the specific unit and date when embarkation occurred. By utilising the link, upon the Embarkation Roll is a brief military biography of the individual. Also on the page are details and picture of the ship in which embarkation occurred for that specific soldier.

Note 2: There are duplications of some names in the following list. The reason for this is that the soldier embarked on more than one occasion. This was the simplest way of resolving the problem of multiple entries for a single individual.

Note 3: In comparing this roll with the official Embarkation Rolls published by the Department of Defence during the Great War, it will be noticed that some names are absent. The reason for this lies in the fact that when the official Embarkation Rolls were compiled, last minute absentees for one reason or another were recorded as embarking whereas in actuality, no embarkation occurred. In addition, there are other names that have been included that do not appear in the official Embarkation Rolls and yet they embarked with that particular group.

 South Africa 1899 - 1902

Allied with: King Edward's Horse (The King's Overseas Dominions Regiment).

History:

Below is a brief historical outline from RK Peacock, Evolution of Australian Light Horse Regiments 1841-1935,  Unpublished MSS, c.1936, p. 11.

This regiment owes its origin to the Brisbane Mounted Rifles. During the year 1889 a troop was raised at Warwick and Tooromba, respectively. They carried on as inpidual troops until 1891 when the amounted troops zero organised as Mounted Infantry, they united and became the Darling Downs Mounted Infantry "G" Company being from  Warwick and "H" Company from Toowoomba

When the mounted troops were organized as battalions in 1900 the Darling Downs Mounted Infantry became the 2nd Battalion Queensland Mounted Infantry with six companies, "A" Warwick; "B" Toowoomba; "C" Clifton; "D" Dalby; "E" Roma and "F" Stanthorpe.

Then came the Federal reorganization of 1903 men these six companies were formed into the 14th Australian Light Horse Regiment Queensland Mounted Infantry. As such they continued until 1912 when the 14th became the 3rd (Darling Downs) Light Horse only to be again changed in 1913 to the 3rd (Darling Downs) Light Horse.

From 1913 to 1927 the regiment carried on as the 3rd but in the latter year it was transformed into the 11th Light Horse Regiment (Darling Downs Light Horse, Queensland Mounted Infantry).

History:

The 1st (Central Queensland) Light Horse Regiment came from a long line from the original Queensland Mounted Infantry. During the reforms of 1900, this particular formation took the name of the 3rd Battalion Queensland Mounted Infantry. When the 1903 Defence Act amalgamated all the inpidual states' forces into a unified force, the 3rd Battalion QMI was renamed the 15th Australian Light Horse,  Queensland Mounted Infantry. The introduction of universal service after the Kitchener Report of February 1910, led to the reformation of the 15th Australian Light Horse into the renamed 1st (Central Queensland) Light Horse Regiment.
