"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

History:

Below is a brief historical outline from RK Peacock, Evolution of Australian Light Horse Regiments 1841-1935,  Unpublished MSS, c.1936, p. 7.

The 1st Australian Horse was a volunteer unit raised in New South Wales in 1897. It was organised in Squadrons. "A" Squadron being recruited from Murrumburrah, Cootamundra and Gundagai; "B" Goulburn, Braidwood, Araluen, Michelago, Bredlbo and Bungendore; "C" : Squadron Mudgee and Rylston; "D" Squadron from Scone, Belltrees and Muswellbrook; "E" Squadron from Tamworth, and Armidale districts. The 1st Australian Horse carried its title until 1903.

On the Federal re-organization of 1903 it was broken up, resulting in "A" and "B" Squadrons, together with the No. 3 Bega Squadron of the New South Wales Mounted Rifles and "K" Company 2nd N. S.W. Infantry from Cooma were formed into a Mounted Regiment and styled 3rd Australian Light Horse (Australian Horse ). "C" Squadron passed over the 2nd A.L.H. Regiment; "D" and "E" Squadrons forming the nucleus of the 6th A.L.H. Regiment.

"G" Company, 4th Infantry Regiment, together with "D" and "E" Squadrons, 1st Australian Horse, to be formed into the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Australian Horse).
