HMAT A8 Argyllshire

 

1st Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 9th Reinforcements, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire 30 September 1915.

The HMAT A8 Argyllshire weighed 10,392 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the Scottish Shire Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 24 January 1918.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1227 Private Franz Christian Henri AHMELMANN, a 27 year old Labourer from Picton, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 23 March 1919.

1226 Private Lionel Edgar ASHTON, a 26 year old Farmer from Temora, New South Wales. He enlisted on 18 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 5 April 1919.

 

1230 Private Frederick Robert BARTON, a 21 year old Floor man from Wee Waa, New South Wales. He enlisted on 7 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 13 April 1919.

1229 Private Norman BERRY, a 25 year old Agent from Liverpool, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 May 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 25 August 1917.

1281 Private Francis Allen BLOOMFIELD, a 21 year old Horse breaker from Wee Waa, New South Wales. He enlisted on 7 March 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 18 December 1918.

1231 Private Frank Sinclair BUTLER, a 23 year old Foreman from Dannes Creek, New South Wales. He enlisted on 9 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

 

1236 Private Michael CLANCY, a 35 year old Horse breaker from Newtown, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 April 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 5 April 1917.

1235 Private Lionel Robert CLARKE, a 22 year old Carter from Mascot, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 May 1915; and subsequently, Died of Wounds 3 August 1917.

1237 Private William Edward COMMONS, a 25 year old Labourer from Delegate, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 May 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 12 November 1916.

1238 Private Harry CONLON, a 21 year old Farmer from Liverpool, New South Wales. He enlisted on 26 April 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 31 October 1917.

1279 Private Norman Thomas CORREY, an 18 year old Traveller from Concord, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 July 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 28 November 1918.

1239 Private Francis CURLEY, an 18 year old Motor driver from Leichhardt, New South Wales. He enlisted on 18 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 3 March 1919.

 

1284 Private Arthur Napier DONNELLY, a 20 year old Labourer from Eden, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 11 May 1919.

 

1240 Private Leslie EBSWORTH, a 23 year old Law Clerk from Orange, New South Wales. He enlisted on 9 May 1915; and subsequently was, Killed in Action 15 October 1917.

1277 Private William EGAN, a 21 year old Groom from Goulburn, New South Wales. He enlisted on 8 April 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 24 January 1919.

 

1241 Private Ralph Stewart FAIREY, a 35 year old Overseer from East Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 13 February 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 21 July 1918.

 

1242 Private James William GALAGHER, a 19 year old Grazier from Capertree, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 April 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 23 March 1919.

1243 Private Hugh Rusden GILMAN, a 40 year old Surveyor from Wagga, New South Wales. He enlisted on 14 July 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 26 September 1917.

1283 Private John GRAHAM, a 40 year old Farmer from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 27 January 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 21 April 1918.

 

1245 Private William John HOGAN, a 19 year old Carter from Emmaville, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

1246 Private Arnold Wentworth HORE, a 28 year old Grazier from Bowna, New South Wales. He enlisted on 8 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 23 March 1919.

1244 Private George Henry HUGHES, a 36 year old Horse breaker from Kyneton, Victoria. He enlisted on 6 May 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 1 February 1918.

 

1247 Private Charles Albert Hope INGRAM, a 21 year old Labourer from Dellicknora, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 April 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 15 February 1918.

 

1248 Private Alfred JAMES, a 29 year old Carrier from Randwick, New South Wales. He enlisted on 20 April 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 27 March 1920.

1249 Private William Richard JONES, a 24 year old Station Overseer from Randwick, New South Wales. He enlisted on 9 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 23 March 1919.

 

1250 Private Stuart Rossiter LAWSON, an 18 year old School boy from Ashfield, New South Wales. He enlisted on 16 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 1 May 1919.

1251 Private Caleb Francis LEDWIDGE, a 19 year old Labourer from Carrathool, New South Wales. He enlisted on 7 May 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 21 April 1918.

1252 Private Charles Sehan LOGAN, an 18 year old School boy from Croydon, New South Wales. He enlisted on 16 March 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 10 March 1918.

 

1253 Private Alfred MARTIN, a 32 year old Motor driver from Narrabri, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 June 1915; and subsequently, Died of Disease 4 November 1918.

1255 Private Jack Lancelot MATTHEWS, a 22 year old Jockey from Moruya, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 12 December 1919.

1256 Private Alexander McCREDIE, a 24 year old Jockey from New Lambton, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 8 April 1919.

1257 Private William Claude McCREDIE, a 29 year old Horse trainer from Adamstown, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 June 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 2 September 1916.

1262 Private George Frederick McINTYRE, a 27 year old Farmer from Cumberland, New South Wales. He enlisted on 9 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 23 March 1919.

1258 Private Leslie Macquarie McMAUGH, a 37 year old Farmer from Port Macquarie, New South Wales. He enlisted on 8 June 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 26 December 1918.

1259 Private Jack McMILLAN, a 20 year old Timber Merchant from Mulwhy via Batemans Bay, New South Wales. He enlisted on 18 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 6 May 1919.

1254 Private John Chambers METCHETTE, a 22 year old Gardener from Coonamble, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 5 April 1919.

 

1260 Private George Fletcher NOBBS, a 20 year old Farmer from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 31 March 1915; and subsequently, Died of Wounds 8 March 1918.

1261 Private Dudley John NORTH, a 35 year old Gentleman from Marrickville, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 July 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 29 January 1916.

 

1263 Private Charles Bernard O'NEILL, a 22 year old Buggy driver from Armidale, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 April 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 20 December 1918.

 

Captain Fulke Knatchbull PRIDEAUX-BRUNE, a 29 year old Independent from Bellevue Hill, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 September 1915; and subsequently was, Discharged in Britain 10 November 1916.

 

1265 Private Alexander RAMSAY, a 24 year old Overseer from Neutral Bay, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 May 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 24 August 1918.

1264 Private Sidney Albert REYNOLDS, a 25 year old Station hand from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 15 June 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 11 July 1917.

 

1269 Private Francis SHIEL, a 24 year old Farmer from Maldon, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

1268 Private John McDonald SIMONS, a 42 year old Caddy from North Manly, New South Wales. He enlisted on 31 March 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 17 July 1916.

1266 Private Norman Douglas SMALL, a 24 year old Insurance Inspector from Prospect, New South Wales. He enlisted on 1 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 23 March 1919.

1267 Private Sidney SMITH, a 37 year old Clerk from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 15 April 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 21 December 1917.

1280 Private Edward SPEARMAN, a 30 year old Groom from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 20 June 1919.

1282 Private Leslie Lancelot ST HILL, a 22 year old Farrier from Newton, New South Wales. He enlisted on 28 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 18 February 1919.

 

1270 Private Cecil James TURNER, a 21 year old Clerk from Manly, New South Wales. He enlisted on 1 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 5 April 1919.

 

1272 Private George D. WALCOTT, a 31 year old Grazier from Delegate, New South Wales. He enlisted on 30 April 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 15 February 1918.

1274 Private Valentine Sidney WALLER, a 22 year old Photographer from Bondi, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 May 1915; and subsequently, Returned to Australia 12 May 1918.

1271 Private Arthur Donald WATSON, a 25 year old Grazier from Gerogery, New South Wales. He enlisted on 9 June 1915; and subsequently was, Discharged in Britain 18 July 1918.

1275 Private William Robert WILSON, a 21 year old Letter sorter from Beechworth, Victoria. He enlisted on 11 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia 30 October 1919.

The HMAT A47 Mashobra weighed 8,174 tons with an average cruise speed of 12.5 knots or 23.15 kmph. It was owned by the British India SN Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 21 December 1916. The Mashobra was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean, 15 April 1917.

1547 Private Harold DOHERTY, a 22 year old Boilermaker from Pitt Street, Redfern, New South Wales. He enlisted on 16 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 12 April 1916.

1548 Private Leslie Percy DOWSETT, a 21 year old Boilermaker from Wall Street, North Wagga, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 8 April 1919.

1544 Private Samuel Frederick DUNBAR, a 31 year old Stockman from Glenrock via Scone, New South Wales. He enlisted on 18 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.
