HMAT A16 Star of Victoria

 

1st Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, Machine Gun Section, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A16 Star of Victoria 20 October 1914.

The HMAT A16 Star of Victoria, later renamed Port Melbourne, weighed 9,152 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd London and leased by the Commonwealth until 2 October 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

406 Private Alfred ELLIS, a 23 year old Farrier from Cowra, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 20 October 1915.

 

75 Driver Clifford Charles HAYDON, a 23 year old Dealer from Manilla, New South Wales. He enlisted on 2 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 31 October 1917.

73 Private Richard Roy HETHERINGTON, a 23 year old Boundry rider from Queanbeyan, New South Wales. He enlisted on 1 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 17 September 1915.

 

52 Private Rhys Travers JONES, a 21 year old Farmer from Lucerne Vale, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 October 1918.

4 Squadron Sergeant Major William James KNIGHT, a 38 year old Soldier from Leichhardt, New South Wales. He enlisted on 20 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 November 1919.

 

32 Private Charles Archibald LINDSELL, a 24 year old Coach builder from Randwick, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 November 1918.

 

65 Private Frank Joseph McDONALD, a 22 year old Electrician from Paddington, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 16 May 1919.

66 Private Percy John McDONALD, a 25 year old Carpenter from Paddington, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 October 1918.

1st Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 13th Reinforcements, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT 42 Boorara 20 December 1914

The HMAT 42 Boorara weighed 5,923 tons with an average cruise speed of 10.5 knots or 19.44 kmph. The Boorara was previously a captured German vessel called Pfalz. It was manned by Australia officers and crew and transferred to Commonwealth Government Line, 24 June 1919.

1st Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 4th Reinforcements, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A9 Shropshire 17 March 1915.

The HMAT A9 Shropshire weighed 8,130 tons with an average cruise speed of 15 knots or 27.78 kmph. It was owned by the Federal SN Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 5 August 1917.
