HMAT A15 Port Sydney

 

The General Service Reinforcements, 4th GSR, New South Wales, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board the HMAT A15 Port Sydney 17 August 1918.

The HMAT A15 Star of England, later renamed Port Sydney, weighed 9,136 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 22 September 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

57300 Private Joseph Edmund John ANDREWS, a 38 year old Farmer from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57299 Private Leslie Moncrieff ANDREWS, an 18 year old Clerk from Wingham, New South Wales. He enlisted on 1 December 1915. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57368 Private Herbert AYRES, a 28 year old Motor Mechanic from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 26 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 17 July 1919.

 

57306 Private Donald Kenneth BOWYER, a 19 year old Clerk from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57303 Private Charles John Edward BRENNAN, a 19 year old Clerk from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 9 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 6th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 27 June 1919.

57301 Private George Frederick BRENNING, a 19 year old Farmer from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 11 June 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57381 Private Alexander Robert BUCKLE, an 18 year old Clerk from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 31 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57305 Private John Harold BUCKLEY, a 35 year old Grazier from unknown. He enlisted on 26 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 29 April 1919.

57302 Private Cecil Aubrey BUTLER, a 21 year old Surveyor's Draftsman from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Signal Troop; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

57304 Private Norman William BUTLER, a 23 year old Station Hand from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 3 July 1919.

 

57316 Private Stanhope Mason CARR, a 39 year old Station Manager from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 28 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 4 March 1919.

57307 Private William Francis CASEY, a 18 year old Labourer from Redfern, New South Wales. He enlisted on 8 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 6th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 27 June 1919.

57313 Private Charles Augustus CATES, a 24 year old Dairyman / Labourer from Waverley, New South Wales Belmore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 August 1915. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 14 March 1919.

57314 Private Eric Edward CHAMPION, a 20 year old School Teacher from Granville, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

57312 Private William Wallace CHATFIELD, a 21 year old Labourer from Baradine, New South Wales. He enlisted on 14 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57348 Private Leslie William CLOW aka William RYAN, a 27 year old Labourer from Goulburn, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 6th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 27 June 1919.

57315 Private Wroughton Alexander CODRINGTON, an 18 year old Jackeroo from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 28 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 6th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 27 June 1919.

57310 Private Andrew COLLISON, a 19 year old Grazier from Scone, New South Wales. He enlisted on 27 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57373 Private William John COMINS, a 20 year old Audit clerk from Randwick, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Australian Stationery Hospital; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919.

57309 Private Charles William James CORK-WOODS, a 40 year old Film Producer from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 9 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57378 Private Patrick COX, a 38 year old Gate Keeper from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 29 April 1919.

57311 Private Arthur Pearce CROUCH, an 18 year old Jackeroo from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57308 Private Robert CUNEO, a 19 year old Butcher from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

 

57317 Private John DALEY, a 39 year old Labourer from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 2 April 1917. He was Not Taken On Strength; and subsequently Deserted 15 August 1918.

57382 Private James Laurence DONNELLY, a 21 year old Clerk from Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 6 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57365 Private John Keith DOWNIE, a 20 year old Engine driver from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57318 Private John Matthew DWYER, a 20 year old Student from Hawkesbury Collage, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

 

57320 Private James Henry Hercules GINN, a 21 year old Labourer from Cairns, Queensland. He enlisted on 29 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57321 Private William John GODBOLD, a 33 year old Drover from Tamworth, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 6th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 June 1919.

57293 Private Alexander Wheatley William GRAY, a 19 year old Student from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 March 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 7th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 23 January 1919.

57319 Private Francis William Heyden GURNEY, a 19 year old Jackeroo from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 28 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 6th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 June 1919.

 

57323 Private Edward Patrick HADDON, a 19 year old Labourer from Mineral Hill via Condoblin, New South Wales. He enlisted on 14 February 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57377 Private Walter Alexander HALL, a 26 year old Miner from Muswellbrook, New South Wales. He enlisted on 25 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 6th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 19 February 1919.

57322 Private William Gordon HAWKINS, a 22 year old Labourer from Gulgong, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 August 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57324 Private Albert James HIBBS, a 18 year old Labourer from Quirindi, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 13 March 1919.

57325 Private Cedric William HOLLOWAY, a 20 year old Stockman from Quirindi, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Ambulance; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

57360 Private Colin Bruce HUDSON, a 19 year old Packer from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 13 May 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 7th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 28 June 1919.

The General Service Reinforcements, 4th GSR, Victoria, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board the HMAT A15 Port Sydney 17 August 1918.

The HMAT A15 Star of England, later renamed Port Sydney, weighed 9,136 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 22 September 1917.

57181 Private Harry WENHAM, a 19 year old Grocer’s mate from Caltowie, South Australia; He enlisted on 25 March 1918; After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 9th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 10 July 1919;

HMAT A15 Port Sydney

 

The General Service Reinforcements, 4th GSR, Tasmania, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board the HMAT A15 Port Sydney 17 August 1918.

The HMAT A15 Star of England, later renamed Port Sydney, weighed 9,136 tons with an average cruise speed of 13.5 knots or 25.00 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 22 September 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

57211 Private William BRAY, a 38 year old Miner from Perth, Western Australia. He enlisted on 21 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 19 April 1919.

 

57212 Private Clyde CAMPBELL, a 21 year old Labourer from Claremont, Tasmania. He enlisted on 13 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

57213 Private Percy John CAMPBELL, a 22 year old Farmer from Oaklands, Tasmania. He enlisted on 13 April 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the Australian Army Service Corps Australian Mounted Division Train; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 26 July 1919.

 

57215 Private Cecil George ELLIS, an 18 year old Tramway Employee from Hobart, Tasmania. He enlisted on 9 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 29 April 1919.

 

57216 Corporal Max O'KEEFE, an 18 year old Locksmith from Launceston, Tasmania. He enlisted on 15 March 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 15 May 1919.

 

57217 Private Harold Arthur Rhys THOMAS, a 19 year old Farmer from Devonport, Tasmania. He enlisted on 1 March 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 26 July 1919.

 

57218 Private Lisle Christian Palliser WILSON, a 19 year old Law Student from Hobart, Tasmania. He enlisted on 5 June 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia 27 January 1919.
