HMAT A9 Shropshire

 

5th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 7th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A9 Shropshire 20 August 1915.

The HMAT A9 Shropshire weighed 8,130 tons with an average cruise speed of 15 knots or 27.78 kmph. It was owned by the Federal SN Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 5 August 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier;

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1098 Private George ALLEN, a 22 year old Carpenter from Ravenshoe, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 27 June 1919.

1100 Private Arthur ANDERSON, a 19 year old Miner from Ravenswood, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 27 May 1919.

1099 Private Cecil Francis Spencer ATHERTON, a 35 year old Stockman from Yeppoon, Queensland. He enlisted on 13 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 27 June 1919.

 

1126 Signaller Albert Ernest Lawrence BARKE, a 23 year old Traveller from Bundaberg, Queensland. He enlisted on 1 March 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 17 March 1916.

1108 Private Reginald John BUTTSWIRTHaka John SULLIVAN, a 25 year old Labourer from Broken Hill, New South Wales. He enlisted on 8 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 2 January 1919.

 

1102 Private William CAIRNS, a 28 year old Labourer from Many Peaks, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 27 June 1919.

1125 Private Robert Joseph CHIDLOW, a 21 year old Labourer from Barcaldine, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 23 July 1919.

1107 Private Robert CLARK, a 38 year old Farmer from Callawadda, Victoria. He enlisted on 23 April 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 17 July 1919.

1116 Private Charles Joseph CONAGHAN, a 34 year old Labourer from Rockhampton, Queensland. He enlisted on 30 January 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 4 January 1919.

1123 Private Samuel Freestone CROFT, a 21 year old Labourer from Sand Hills, Queensland. He enlisted on 1 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

 

1124 Private Reuben FREEMAN, a 20 year old Labourer from South Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 March 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

 

1087 Private James GARDNER, a 26 year old Farmer from Mareeba, Queensland. He enlisted on 3 March 1915; and subsequently Died of Accident, 8 November 1916.

1112 Acting Sergeant William GEDDES, a 37 year old Stockman from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 5 February 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 November 1917.

1103 Private William John GILLES, a 34 year old Labourer from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 12 February 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 4 November 1917.

1086 Private Christopher GILLS, a 19 year old Labourer from Virginia, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

 

1090 Private William Burnard HALLETT, a 24 year old Labourer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 26 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 19 March 1916.

1094 Acting Corporal George HARDING, a 38 year old Bandmaster from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 3 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 June 1916.

1113 Acting Sergeant Herbert Charles HARDWICK, a 19 year old Labourer from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 7 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.

1076 Private Lindsay Ivan HAWTHORNE, a 19 year old Teacher from Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 12 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

1114 Private Alfred Lloyd HUGHES, a 21 year old Farmer from Wallaroo, South Australia. He enlisted on 6 February 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

5th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 8th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A55 Kyarra 10 August 1915.

The HMAT A55 Kyarra weighed 6,953 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the AUSN Co Ltd, London, and manned by Australia officers and crew. The Kyarra was leased by the Commonwealth until 4 January 1918. The Kyarra was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 26 May 1918.

The HMAT A69 Warilda weighed 7,713 tons with an average cruise speed of 16 knots or 29.63 kmph. It was owned by the Adelaide SS Co Ltd, Adelaide, and manned by Australian officers and mainly by Australian crews. The Warilda was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 3 August 1918.
