5th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, Regimental Headquarters Section, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A34 Persic 21 December 1914.

The HMAT A34 Persic weighed 12,042 tons with an average cruise speed of 13 knots or 24.07 kmph. It was owned by the Oceanic SN Co Ltd, Liverpool, and leased by the Commonwealth until 8 November 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

49 Lance Corporal Francis Walter BENNETT, a 28 year old Accountant from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 April 1918.

376 Signaller John Milton Roy BLACKWELL, a 21 year old Labourer from Chatswood, New South Wales. He enlisted on 26 October 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 28 June 1915.

Honorary Lieutenant Thomas Joseph BRUNDRIT, a 31 year old Crown lands ranger from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 September 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 8 November 1915.

 

35 Private Archibald CHEFFINS, a 27 year old Painter from Bowen, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 2 March 1919.

662 Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant Robert CHRISTIE, a 31 year old Soldier from Bundaberg, Queensland. He enlisted on 24 November 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 12 July 1919.

203 Signaller Theodore Talbot CLARKE, a 27 year old Farmer from Thornton Laidley Creek, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 November 1918.

29 Lance Corporal Alfred Woodburn COOK, a 26 year old Horse trainer from Bundaberg, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 26 December 1918.

154 Lance Corporal Richard Warren CRANE, a 20 year old Selector from Rockhampton, Queensland. He enlisted on 1 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 17 March 1916.

295 Sad/Sgt Urban James CUNNEEN, a 40 year old Saddler from East Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 26 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 April 1916.

 

Dr Captain Joseph Espie DODS, a 40 year old Doctor from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 13 February 1917.

 

490 Signaller Leslie FERRIS, a 26 year old Stockman from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 31 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 October 1918.

639 Driver Joseph Francis FITZGERALD, a 22 year old Horse breaker from Warwick, Queensland. He enlisted on 13 November 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 January 1919.

244 Batman Alexander Madden FOOT, a 22 year old Stockman from Cardington, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 September 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 22 November 1915.

669 Corporal Claude Douglas FOX, a 32 year old Pastoralist from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 26 October 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 September 1919.

 

56 Bugler Sergeant Joseph GRIEVES, a 29 year old Farmer from Ellesmere, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 November 1918.

 

Lieutenant Colonel Hubert Jennings Imrie HARRIS, a 43 year old Secretary from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 October 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 31 July 1915.

661 Regimental Sergeant Major George N. HICKS, a 42 year old Soldier from Murwillumbah, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 November 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 November 1918.

8 Private George HUGHES, a 28 year old Farmer from Maryborough, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 September 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 16 July 1919.

 

Veterinary Captain Edward Stewart JAMES, a 24 year old Veterinary Surgeon from Stanmore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 October 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 January 1920.

242 Bugler Lionel Albert WRIGHT, a 21 year old Clerk from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 23 September 1914, and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 May 1916.

Lieutenant William Leckey Ferguson WRIGHT, a 44 year old Clerk from Kelvin Grove, Queensland. He enlisted on 28 September 1914, and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 July 1917.

388 Acting Corporal Cyril Robert WYLDES, a 24 year old Sawmill hand from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 30 October 1914, and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 December 1918.

 

418 Private Albert John YATES, a 21 year old Farm Labourer from Shannon Brook, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 October 1914, and subsequently Died of Disease, 16 January 1915, and subsequently was buried at sea.
