"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

Admitted to 1st General Hospital, Heliopolis, exact date not recorded [May 1915] ('dangerously ill'); died of appendicitis, 18 May 1915

Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

Base Records to Assistant Adjutant General, 2nd Military District, 20 October 1920, noting that John Fowler was listed on the Attestation Form as next of kin: 'As it is desired to dispose of the 1914/15 Star and other War Medals, etc., will you kindly arrange for discreet enquiries to be made with a view to establishing whether the above quoted widow has any claims ... Investigations might be made from the soldier's widow, whether remarried or not, with a view to ascertaining whether she desires to have the war medals, etc. - she is entitled to them unless there are good and sufficient resons for not handing them over.'

Report, Mulgoa Police Station, to Inspector General of Police, Sydney, 11 October 1920: '... I have interviewed Minnie Hore who was the widow of Private L.R. Fowler now deceased [and] she produced her marriage certificate with Fowler which shows they were married at Mossvale N.S. Wales on the 21st January 1913 by the Rev Chas Hughenden at St John's Church. Since Private L.R. Fowler was killed Minnie Fowler his wife has again married, William John Hore of Greendale[,] Wallacia[;] this marriage took place on the 18th August 1920[;] she is now living with her husband W.J. Hore. I have interviewed John Fowler who was nominated by the deceased Private L.R. Fowler as next of kin and have ascertained that he was the Father of the deceased that was notified and not his wife Minnie Fowler now (Hore) (sic). After enquiries I am satisfied that Minnie Fowler now (Hore) was the wife of the deceased soldier and that John Fowler of Wallacia was the father of the deceased. Mrs Minnie Hore has signed the application for the Medal and decorations which is attached and John Fowler has informed me that he was making an application for them as he considered that he was more entitled to them that (sic) Minnie Hore.'

War medals claimed by widow, Minnie HORE (previously Minnie FOWLER), 11 October 1920.

Medals allotted to widow.
Miscellaneous detailsAddress entered incorrectly on Embarkation Roll as Walbacia; enlistee gave marital status as 'Single'; he was in fact married.
