4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron

The 4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron was formed when the 4th Light Horse Brigade was formed in February 1917. The 4th, 11th and 12th Machine Gun Sections were combined to form the 4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron under the command of the Brigade.

The following Nominal Roll of the known members of the 4th Light Horse Machine Gun includes the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier; 

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date;

The unit in which he enlisted; and,

Fate.

There are some 351 men on this list indicating a fair rate of turnover in personnel over the period the 4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron was in existence. The authorised war establishment of a squadron was 156 men.

1588 Private Edward Richard Lander WARREN, a 25 year old Labourer from Nelsons Plains, New South Wales. He enlisted on 6 July 1915 with the 12th Light Horse Regiment, 6th Reinforcements. At the conclusion of the war, he Returned to Australia, 9 April 1919.

2027 Private George Henry WARREN, a 23 year old Storekeeper from Maryborough, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 July 1916 with the 11th Light Horse Regiment, 13th Reinforcements. At the conclusion of the war, he Returned to Australia, 24 July 1919.

2931 Acting Sergeant William Charles Henry WATT, a 26 year old Driver from St Kilda, Victoria. He enlisted on 26 August 1916 with the 4th Light Horse Regiment, 21st Reinforcements. At the conclusion of the war, he Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1527 Private Herbert Walker WEST, a 23 year old Clerk from Wee Waa, New South Wales. He enlisted on 13 August 1915 with the 12th Light Horse Regiment, 7th Reinforcements. He subsequently was Killed in Action, 25 September 1918.

1908 Private Colin Herbert WHITWELL, a 26 year old Overseer from Capella, Queensland. He enlisted on 10 April 1916 with the 11th Light Horse Regiment, 11th Reinforcements. At the conclusion of the war, he Returned to Australia, 16 May 1919.
