"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

Antill Letter, 12 March 1900

Antill Letter, 12 March 1900

The following transcript is of a letter written by Captain John Macquarie Antill, Officer Commanding the New South Wales Mounted Rifles contingent to South Africa to the New South Wales Chief Staff Officer and Assistant Adjutant General Colonel Henry Douglas Mackenzie.

No orders to place himself under Colonel Knight's command. Captain Antill.

OG

Chief Staff Officer received 19 April 1900.

The Assistant Adjutant General
New South Wales Forces
12 March 1900

Sir
My last advice was from Ramah, which we left on the 10th ultimo joining Colonel Hannay's Brigade en route to Modder River. There has been continuous marching and fighting since and as we seldom have seen our baggage, no opportunity for writing. The hours have been very long generally - 16 hours per day - the Squadron watered in the advanced guard right up to the present. I have taken part in almost every action. The men have been conspicuously steady under fire, and have been fortunate to earn warm praise from Colonel Hannay (Killed at Paardeberg) on the 18th inst and from his successor Colonel Riley being present at the affair at Ramah, Jacobsdal as Advanced Guard action with Cronje at Modder River and Klip Kraal, The Battle at Paardeberg, and the two last attacks on the force which advanced from Bloemfontein to relieve Cronje and which is now retiring on that place.

Within the last week we have been brigaded with Robert’s Horse, Kitchener’s Horse, CIV’s [City of London Imperial Volunteers], 2 Companies Mounted Infantry (NSW Mounted Infantry under Colonel Knight) under Lieutenant Colonel Le Gallais and attached to Army Headquarters. Our casualties to date are:
Private Flint, 16 February 1900, wounded chest (seriously)
Private Ball, T, 17 February 1900, wounded leg
Private Tweedy, 17 February 1900, wounded thigh
Corporal Owens, 19 February 1900, wounded knee
Private Cheshire, 19 February 1900, wounded hand
Private Bond, 22 February 1900, wounded foot
Private Abrahams, 10 March 1900, Killed, shot through heart
The latter was from Bega and an excellent, steady and first rate young soldier. No entry in the default sheet.

Rations and forage owing to the loss of 2 convoys and the reduced stat of transport mules have been very scarce and from the last month reduced to ½ issue and horses 4lbs grain. This has restricted mobility in the latter becoming very weak and a good deal of it from starvation, the grazing being very bad up to this, when we are meeting better country. Have lost several horses under fire but have made up by commandeered ponies from the enemy.

Lieutenant Colonel Knight has not yet handed over my draft of men. I have received no order from you to place myself under his command nor is he possessed of any document to this effect, yet he claims my unit as "A" Company of his Regiment. On the other hand I having been placed by the General officer in Command of the Mounted Rifles Unit which is altogether in no way connected with the Mounted Infantry which was not in evidence at the times of my departure, have asked for the matter to be referred. I will again write if possible from Bloemfontein.

I have the honour to be
Sir
Your obedient servant
JM Antill, Captain
Commander, NSW Mounted Rifles
Abrahams Kraal

New South Wales Citizens Bushmans Contingent

Nominal Roll

In 1911, Lieutenant-Colonel P. L. Murray, produced a marvellous Boer War reference detailing all the contingents sent from Australia to South Africa, giving a brief history of the formation and finally, listing all the soldiers who saw service in South Africa with that unit. The book was called, Official Records of the Australian Military Contingents to the War in South Africa. It is now the standard reference and starting place for any person interested in pursuing information about Australian involvement in the Boer War.

Murray, P. L., Official Records of the Australian Military Contingents to the War in South Africa, pp. 75 - 84A.

Explanatory Notes

In addition to the entries in Murray, others who were identified with the New South Wales Citizens Bushmans Contingent through the Queen's South African Medal Rolls have also been added.

Where ever possible, the Squadron to which the man belonged has been identified.

The linked names refer to the New South Wales Citizens Bushmans Contingent Photograph Album in which an identified photograph of the particular man has been made available. Click on the link to see a photograph of the specific man.

In addition to photographs, some men have been specifically identified and given detailed information. They have been identified and linked at the bottom of this page.

Embarkation Roll: HAY to HER

The following is an alphabetical roll of all Australians known members of the many military formations which embarked overseas during the South African (Second Boer) War, 1899-1902.

Each man is detailed on this reference list with the following information:

Service Number;

Rank on Embarkation;

First Names;

Family Name;

If applicable, any false name employed; and,

Service unit.

Notes

Note 1: All soldiers’ names are linked to the specific unit and date when embarkation occurred.

Note 2: There are duplications of some names in the following list. The reason for this is that the soldier embarked on more than one occasion. This was the simplest way of resolving the problem of multiple entries for a single individual.

Antill Letter, 22 March 1900

The following transcript is of a letter written by Captain John Macquarie Antill, Officer Commanding the New South Wales Mounted Rifles contingent to South Africa to the New South Wales Chief Staff Officer and Assistant Adjutant General Colonel Henry Douglas Mackenzie.

Bloemfontein
22 March 1900

The Assistant Adjutant General
Sydney

Sir

My last was written from Abraham's Kraal from which place we moved by two night marches to our present camp 4 miles west of the town, where it is understood we remain for 2 or 3 weeks for remounts and to rest the horses, which are in the lowest condition from the little or no rations available for the past month. Yesterday full rations were issued for man and beast for the first time, but the horses are in such a reduced state, that with the cold weather coming on that it is doubtful whether they will show much improvement for some time. The following men, Privates Spearing, Sharpe H, Pearse, Miller and Kirkland have gone to hospital it is feared suffering from Enteric, the result no doubt of the polluted water at Paardeberg. These dropped en route sick, viz, Symonds, Bateup, Gosper, Trevitt and Potts have not yet reported so I am unable to say if yet discharged. The six wounded are also in the lines of communication but doing well. The discipline of all ranks is excellent and their work everything which can be desired. Captain Osborne (late Queanbeyan)) has been serving as a Captain in the Irregular Horse, Natal, this corps is mustering out and he was asking for a commission with me. As Lieutenant Lee has gone to the Mounted Infantry and Lieutenant Tooth hears from England of his early appointment to the Imperial Service, I will be glad to have this Officer's services and ask for approval of his appointment as Lieutenant. My officers Lieutenant Maclean and Onslow give me every assistance and I am glad to be able to give the very best reports of them. A lot of sickness such as enteric and dysentery is showing amongst all troops, the latter being very common. I cabled the death of Abrahams last week to General Officer Commanding.

Your Obedient Servant
JM Antill
Commanding NSWMR
