18043 Private Ernest Walter SANDERS, a 31 year old Steam fitter from Ipswich, Queensland. He enlisted on 19 July 1917; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 September 1919.

 

18044 Private Albert Charles TILLEY, a 26 year old Motor driver from Mitchell, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 February 1917; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 24 July 1919.

The following is the nineth extract from a manuscript written by an anonymous author. The hand written manuscript outlines the history of the 2nd ALHR NSW Mounted Rifles from commencement in 1888, until 5 April 1899, when history ceases. From the internal evidence of the manuscript, it appears to have been composed sometime from July 1903 to 1904.

Lieutenant Colonel Lassetter resigned 12 March 1898

On the 12th March 1898, Lieutenant Colonel Lassetter resigned from command of the Mounted Rifles Regiment, and was placed on the Reserve of Officers.

Lieutenant Colonel Onslow assumed command 14 March 1898

On the 14th March 1898, Major JW MacArthur Onslow was appointed Lieutenant Colonel, and assumed command of the Mounted Rifle Regiment, vice Lieutenant Colonel Lassetter resigned.

Camp 1898

On the 7th April 1898, the Regiment marched into camp at Rookwood, for eight days Continuous Training, the camp terminated on the 16th April.

"Duff" Competition 1898

On the 16th April 1898, the "Duff Challenge Cup" was again competed for, on the Randwick Rifle Range, and was won this year, by a section from No. 2 Camden Half Squadron Mounted Rifles by Sergeant J Small.

Queanbeyan ½ Company Disbanded 30 April 1898

On the 30th April 1898, the No. 3 Queanbeyan Half Company Mounted Rifles was disbanded.

2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance, AIF, 31st Reinforcement, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board SS Ormonde 2 March 1918.

The SS Ormonde weighed 14,982 tons with an average cruise speed of 18 knots or 33.33 kmph. It was owned by the Orient St Nav Co Ltd, Glasgow.

18613 Private Thomas James WILCOX, a 33 year old Dealer from Ulmarra, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 May 1917; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 9 December 1919.

Camp 1899

On the 31st March 1899, the Regiment marched into Camp for eight days Continuous Training, under the Mobilization Scheme, the No. 2 Picton and Camden Half Companies, being stationed at Middle Head and Botany respectively, the remainder of the Regiment going under canvas with the Field Force at Rookwood. On Wednesday 5th April, the Picton and Camden Half Companies marched from their respective stations, and joined the remainder of the Regiment at Rookwood.

The following is an extract from Remarks by the General Officer Commanding, on the Easter Encampment, issued with General Order 48/99.

"The GOC notes with satisfaction, the conduct of Picton-Camden Company of Mounted Rifles, on 5th April, when their hired transport broke down, and their arrival in camp was delayed till 2 a.m.."

The camp terminated on the 5th April.

The history ceases at this point and is not taken up until a new hand made an attempt to revive the story in Orange, January 1922.

3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance, AIF, 1st Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A46 Clan Mcgillivray 2 February 1915.

The HMAT A46 Clan McGillivray weighed 5,023 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the Cayser, Irvin and Co, Glasgow, and leased by the Commonwealth until 16 August 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

941 Private Rasmus Robinson HANSEN, a 25 year old Draper from Richmond, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 December 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

947 Private James HARDINGHAM, a 24 year old Student from Sunnydale, Wentworth, via Broken Hill, New South Wales. He enlisted on 2 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 September 1915.

 

949 Driver Frank JONES, a 31 year old Labourer from Maribyrnong, Victoria. He enlisted on 23 November 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 14 December 1918.

 

942 Private Francis Walters Baldock KNOX, a 29 year old Traveller from Benalla, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 October 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 July 1917.

 

944 Driver Jack Boyd ORR, a 22 year old Artist from St Kilda, Victoria / Balaclava, Victoria. He enlisted on 23 November 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

 

945 Driver Norman Edward SEYMOUR, a 21 year old Grocer from Casterton, Victoria. He enlisted on 17 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 November 1917.

950 Private Frank Joseph SHEAHAN, a 22 year old Book keeper from Carlton, Victoria. He enlisted on 28 November 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 18 April 1917.

948 Private Thomas Leigh SIMPSON, a 19 year old Electrical engineer from Clifton, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 14 September 1918.
