HMAT A19 Afric

 

9th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 13th Reinforcement Afric Group, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A19 Afric 5 January 1916.

The HMAT A19 Afric weighed 11,999 tons with an average cruise speed of 13 knots or 24.07 kmph. It was owned by the Federal SN Co Ltd, London. The Afric was torpedoed and sunk in the English Chanel, 12 February 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1836 Private Clifford Joseph BROWN, a 21 year old Blacksmith from Torrensville, South Australia. He enlisted on 4 October 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 September 1919.

1826 Private Herbert John BUTTERS, a 29 year old Jockey from Sunbury, Victoria. He enlisted on 21 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

 

1821 Private William Stanley CANNAN, a 20 year old Labourer from Eaglehawk, Victoria. He enlisted on 20 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

1822 Private Thomas James CARPENTER, a 20 year old Labourer from Welshpool, Victoria. He enlisted on 20 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919.

1827 Private Henry Robert COOK, a 29 year old Labourer from South Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 21 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 May 1919.

 

1790 Private Frederick Charles DIX, a 20 year old Labourer from Fryers Town, Victoria. He enlisted on 8 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 6 September 1919.

9th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 14th Reinforcement, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board HMAT A69 Warilda 10 February 1916.

The HMAT A69 Warilda weighed 7,713 tons with an average cruise speed of 16 knots or 29.63 kmph. It was owned by the Adelaide SS Co Ltd, Adelaide, and manned by Australian officers and mainly by Australian crews. The Warilda was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 3 August 1918.

9th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 16th Reinforcement, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board HMAT A41 Bakara 28 April 1916.

The HMAT A41 Bakara weighed 5,930 tons with an average cruise speed of 10.5 knots or 19.44 kmph. The Bakara was previously a captured German vessel called Constaff. It was manned by Australia officers and crew and transferred to Commonwealth Government Line, 1 May 1918.

2329 Private Arthur Percy STOPP, a 22 year old Labourer from Clare, South Australia. He enlisted on 11 January 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 29 April 1919.

2330 Private Ernest Leslie Robert STRAWBRIDGE, a 24 year old Labourer from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 25 November 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 November 1916.

 

2331 Private Harold Roy TAYLOR, a 23 year old Labourer from Port MacDonnell, South Australia. He enlisted on 23 December 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.

2336 Private Harold Stanley WALLMANN, a 19 year old Mechanic from Walkerville, South Australia. He enlisted on 7 January 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 August 1919.

2339 Private Eli Wilfred WILCOTT, a 25 year old Mason from Appila, South Australia. He enlisted on 24 January 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.

2340 Private Edward WILLIAMS, a 40 year old Butcher from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 20 January 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 24 July 1919.

2179 Private Harry Clifton WISHART, a 32 year old Butcher from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 8 January 1916; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 21 November 1916.

2342 Private Gilbert Henry WOODHOUSE, a 19 year old Labourer from Snowtown, South Australia. He enlisted on 4 January 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.

2343 Private Alexander Robertson WRIGHT, a 24 year old Labourer from Broken Hill, New South Wales. He enlisted on 14 January 1916; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 6 November 1917.
