HMAT A70 Ballarat

 

11th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 5th Reinforcements Ballarat Group, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board HMAT A70 Ballarat 14 September 1915.

The HMAT A70 Ballarat weighed 11,120 tons with an average cruise speed of 14 knots or 25.92 kmph. It was owned by the P & O SN Co, London. The Ballarat was torpedoed by a submarine in the English Channel, 25 April 1917 and sank the next day.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

11th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 5th Reinforcements Warilda Group, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A69 Warilda 5 October 1915.

The HMAT A69 Warilda weighed 7,713 tons with an average cruise speed of 16 knots or 29.63 kmph. It was owned by the Adelaide SS Co Ltd, Adelaide, and manned by Australian officers and mainly by Australian crews. The Warilda was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 3 August 1918.

1197 Private Cyril Aylton MURRAY, a 19 year old Printer from Auchenflower, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 24 July 1919.

 

1205 Private Frederick Nicholson NAUGHTON, a 32 year old Paper ruler from Red Hill, Queensland. He enlisted on 9 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

1207 Private Philip Sylvester NEALE, a 29 year old Farmer from Nobby, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

1206 Private Charles NEILSON, a 23 year old Stockman from Rockhampton, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 April 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 19 April 1919.

1208 Private Timothy James O'NEILL, a 25 year old Stockman from Eidsvold, Queensland. He enlisted on 10 April 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 November 1917.

1210 Private Arnold OTTERSPOOR, a 22 year old Labourer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 19 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919.

1211 Private Claude POWELL, a 24 year old Stock inspector from Tweed Heads, New South Wales. He enlisted on 16 August 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 1 May 1918.
