Civilian riding in Government Vehicles

Army Standing Order No. 473 is promulgated for the information and necessary action of all concerned:-

Civilians are not allowed to enter or travel in any War Department vehicle, unless in the possession of a written permit, signed by a Commanding or Staff Officer, which will be issued only in very exceptional circumstances. The senior officer, NCO, or man with the vehicle will be held responsible that this order is strictly adhered to.

The 22nd Corps Cavalry was located in France. It was a composite regiment including men from "B" and "D" Squadrons from the 4th Light Horse Regiment and a Squadron from the Otago Mounted Rifles.

Interesting to note the allocation of seats to the cinema to the members of the Regiment. The previous evening the other half of the Regiment viewed the movie.

Men needed to be reminded that driving girls around in the cars was not considered to be lawful. It is noteworthy that the men needed to be reminded of this which tends to indicate that it was quite common, or common enough to prompt a reminder.

The following entries are extracted and transcribed from the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, the originals of which are held by the Australian War Memorial. There are 366 entries on this site. Each day has entries as they occurred from 1914 to 1919. In addition to the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, when appropriate, entries from the 3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary and other regiments with the Brigade will also appear. Entries from the unit history, Darley, TH, With the Ninth Light Horse in the Great War, Adelaide, Hassell Press, 1924 will also appear from time to time. The aim is to give the broadest context to the story and allow the reader to follow the day to day activities of the regiment. If a relative happened to have served in the regiment during the Great War, then this provides a general framework in which the individual story may be told.

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Walkers Ridge

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Lieutenant Colonel Miell took over temporary command of 3rd Light Horse Brigade during temporary absence of Colonel FG Hughes.

No 4 Section reorganised.

Regiment now occupies position shown on Sketch 4.

Bomb from Sap 2 to 8 considered most likely objective for Turk attack and it was considered advisable to have one complete unit on this front.

3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary - Visited trenches 29th Division.

Heavy shelling from Asia on Army Headquarters.

Destroyed two planes [French].

8th Light Horse Regiment to trenches.

Casualties: 8th Light Horse Regiment, two wounded. 9th Light Horse Regiment, one killed.

9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Syllabus of training to be carried out daily from 1400 to 1700 received from Brigade Headquarters. Copies issued to Squadrons.

The Regiment paraded mounted at 1330 and proceeded across the wadi and carried out dismounting for action returning to camp at 1730.

Bert Schramm

2823 Private Herbert Leslie SCHRAMM, a 22 year old Farmer from Whites River, South Australia. He enlisted on 17 February 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.

During part of the course of his military service with the AIF, Bert Schramm kept a diary of his life. Bert was not a man of letters so this diary was produced with great effort on his behalf. Bert made a promise to his sweetheart, Lucy Solley, that he would do so after he received the blank pocket notebook wherein these entries are found. As a Brigade Scout since September 1918, he took a lead part in the September Offensive by the Allied forces in Palestine. Bert's diary entries are placed alongside those of the 9th Light Horse Regiment to which he belonged and to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade to which the 9th LHR was attached. On this basis we can follow Bert in the context of his formation.

It reads:

1. Duties (Routine)
Reporting to Sergeant Cook at 0445:
Water Picquet - 3 men from "B" Squadron parading at 1800.
Pipeline Picquet - Section from "A" Squadron reporting at 0830.
Quarter Guard - 1 NCO and 3 men from "B" Squadron parading at 1800.
QMS's Fatigue - 1 NCO and 10 men from "A" Squadron reporting at 0730.
Supply Fatigue - 4 men reporting to Sergeant Fuzzard at Supply Depot at 0430 from "A" Squadron.
Escorts - From "B" Squadron, 3 men at 0400, 2 men at 0415, 4 men at 0430 and 6 men at 0500.

2. Complimentary Extract from RO 502 by Brigadier General Antill.
The following communication has been received from General Headquarters:
The Commander in Chief has received with interest the full report on the recent operation in the Munksheib and has been able to appreciate more fully the work done.
He considers that this operation could not have been better planned, organised and carried out. It reflects the greatest credit on Brigadier Antill, Lieutenant Colonel Todd and all ranks.
He is particularly struck with the splendid way the men worked. Their discipline and endurance stood the test extremely well.
Altogether in this Brigade and its attached troops he considers that he has troops he can rely on.

This RO concentrates upon the routine requirements of maintaining the line at Serapeum. It also notes the earlier reconnaissance to Wadi el Munksheib in which the 8th Light Horse Regiment played a notable role in March 1915.

10th LHR Routine Order No 156, 19 June 1916

Apart from the War Diary which presents a reflected view of Regimental history, one of the best sources of understanding the immediate challenges facing a regiment is to be found in the Routine Orders. They are a wealth of detail.

10th LHR Routine Order No 156, 19 June 1916

The expedition to Wadi um Muksheib was quite expansive involving some 859 men, 880 horses and 903 camels from the 9th and 10th LHRs. The story is told in the 10th LHR War Diary for June 1916. The relevant page is reproduced below.
