The story of Hill 60 is continued through the 3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary.

Extract from C. O. 10th L. H. on recent operations:-

On 28th proceeded to TABLE TOP via CHALAK DERE but when No.3 outpost was reached ordered proceed to No.6 Section - No. 2 S. section Br. Gen. Russell DAMAK JELIR BAIR 92 S.I. - Lieut HOWARD and BURGESS and 50 men were detailed at 2 a.m.    

29/8 under Genl. RUSSELL'S instructions to proceed to Reserve Trenches carrying bombs.      
        
29th Regt. in bivouac -- At 7 a.m. Lt. Col. BRAZIER wounded over eye, command of Regt. devolving on Major J. B. SCOTT. At 0810 message from Genl. RUSSELL asking for another 50 men but these were not immediately required - At 1500 all officers reported to Gen. RUSSELL and went round Trenches. At 2030 opn. order instructing 10th L. H. to assault uncaptured Trenches centre and left of KAIJAK AGHALA on N.W. slope of Hill 60 S.W.100 yds.

On 29/8 proceeded under rifle, M. G. and bomb fire with few casualties took possession of TURK Trenches which were lightly held -- Thro' night heavy bombing: daylight determined counter attack which was repulsed with much loss. During day position consolidated and Trenches deepened and repaired -- 2 M.Gs. emplaced, trenches bomb proofed and Commn. trenches made. Although exhausted still In possession."

These have been detached since we arrived in Gallipoli: Also reported Reg. H. Q. of 12th L. H. Regt. 5 A. L. H. Bde. 4 officers, Lt. Col. W. GRANT, Captn. P. J. BAILEY: (Adj.) Cap t. J. MacDONALD, A. A. M. C; 2nd Hon. Lt. & Q. M. LIVINGSTONE and 11 others: Took Lt. Col. ABBOTT and Lt. Col. GRANT over the positions to be occupied by the Brigade TABLE TOP and Rhododendron.

1st September  

Preparing new quarters in SAZLI BEIT DERE at S. Slope of TABLE TOP. Visited Trenches to be taken over with C.O.'s 9th and 10th L. H. and others.

The story of Hill 60 is continued through the 3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary. At this point Antill is worried about holding the trenches with raw Territorials.

2nd. September 1915

1 Troop D. Sqn. 9th L. H. took over TABLE TOP post this morning -- made sketches of forward positions -- Lt. Col. ABBOTT visited A. H. Q. and saw Genl. BIRDWOOD - 8th L. H. 1 wounded; 10th L. H. 4 men killed; 1 wounded; 18 men to hospital - Lieut. HUGHES (S.C.) to Hospital also B. Ms. batman BUS - Captn. COWLISHAW A. M. C. to 16th Battn. Lieut. Oliver from Hospital returned - Major Parsons sick to Hospital -- Marched into Bde Area and attached -- Three officers 206 of 1st/5th Suffolks: 50 other ranks of 1st/8th Hants: 25 others 8th M.Gs.: 20 others 9th M.Gs.: 5 officers 55 others, including M. G. Section:

"D" Sqn. 9th L. H. and 2 officers, 172 of 54th Divn. took over Canterbury Slope from Canterbury Infy. (Lt.Col.Young) 8th L. H. M.Gs. to TABLE TOP.   

3rd. September 1915 

Took over Area "B" Section 5 -- Capt. Skelsi N.Z.R.E. cabled and received Instructions re defences of Post. Men of any experience whatever retained in No.6 area. Total number of rank and file available for Trenches at present are 8th L. H. Nil.; 9th L.H. 108 (new and transferred from 11th L.H.) - 10th L.H. Nil - Hants and Suffolks 233 - 341. Altogether unsafe and inadequate as represented to Division. There are no supports. No Reserves, and all the men who are not aw are dead beat -- The Tarritorials are poor physiqued and undersized and when put at work with tools at digging make the poorest show -- There are only 4 officers with them. Should any misadventure occur in this command the above is recorded but responsibility cannot rest with the Brigade from which ll its men have been detached and sent to another Section.

6th September 1915  

Spent all the morning supervising new area -- There is an accumulation of all sorts of arms, equipment, ammunition used and unused -- tools -- clothing scattered verywhere    -- The Place is filthy and covered with tins and rubbish.

The Battle of Krithia

The attack on Krithia, 9 May 1915.

Krithia, a Greek village situated seven kilometres from the toe of the Gallipoli Peninsula at Cape Helles and lying at the base of the peak named Achi Baba, was on 8 May 1915 the scene of an attack undertaken by the Australian 2nd Infantry Brigade under Colonel James M'Cay. To assist British forces attempting to advance against growing Turkish opposition to the beach-head established there on 25 April, two brigades - the Australian 2nd and the New Zealand-were transferred from Anzac and brought ashore on 6 May. Both this day and the next the Anzac troops watched French and British forces attempt to advance across the open ground leading to Achi Baba, before the New Zealanders were added to the struggle on the morning of 8 May.

When this latest attempt also gained little ground, yet another attack was ordered for 5.30 that same afternoon-this time with the Australians taking part in the centre. No advance warning of involvement was received in the brigade until shortly before 5 p.m. when the order arrived, at which time M'Cay was away visiting the New Zealanders and his men were preparing their evening meal. Despite this inadequate notice, the troops were in position to join in the assault, as required. After advancing over open ground under fire to reach the leading trenches occupied by British soldiers, within minutes the Australians were called out from this shelter by their brigadier to continue the advance. Pressing on under increasingly heavy fire from enemy small arms and artillery, the Australians covered another 500 metres before being forced to a standstill by their losses. The leading Turkish positions could be observed only some 400 metres ahead, but the village of Krithia was still some 2,000 metres away. The hour-long advance entailed by this attempt had cost 2nd Brigade 1,000 casualties, or one-third of its strength.
