Having just completed reading the book Scapegoats of the Empire, I have concluded that Lt.s Morant and Handcock were ultimately found guilty of the wrong crimes. It seems that they should have been found guilty of the murder of Rev Hesse, but not necessarily of the Boer prisoners. It seems, based on written documents that it was the standing order to shoot prisoners.
