Morant and Handcock were shot by a firing squad of Scottish troops (Cameron Highlanders).

Captain Robert Roland Thompson was CO of the First Australian Horse (not the 'Australian Commonwealth Horse, with which they are sometimes confused). He served from February to November 1900, being awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with four clasps. As Morant and Handcock were executed in February 1902, it seems highly unlikely that this would be the same officer.
