El Arish, now Al Arish, is in the Northern Sinai; 48 km from the border town of Rafah which is 4 km inside Gaza (1999 Lonely Planet Guide to Egypt). Al Arish, population 40,000, is the capital of Sinai and a summer resort for the Cairo middle classes. The museum is worth visiting, but not the (terrible) zoo.

Operation Farad is the UN peacekeeping operation in the Sinai since 1982. New Zealand currently has 26 troops at El Gorah with the MFO or Multinational Force & Observers. Go to www.army.mil.nz then Operations then Sinai, Egypt. It says population of Al Arish goes to 60-80,000 with Bedouin passing through. Australian troops are there too!
