The Jack Pollard edition I have (1982) says that " he(Cotter) raised his head over the rim of a trench at Beersheba to verify what his periscope had told him and was shot dead by a sniper." But I believe there is a document in the NSW cricket archives from a serving colleague which says Cotter should have been on guard duty that day,but disobeyed orders to take part in the Beersheba charge, was wounded during it and died that afternoon.
