My grandfather Frederick Arthur Stroud (Fred/Freddie) b.1897 was a driver in the Divisional Ammunition Column Oct1917-May1918 which with the 19th Brigade RHA provided the artillery support for the Australian Mounted Division (3rd & 4th ALH brigades + 5th Mounted Brigade) as part of the Desert Mounted Corps in Palastine. He was assigned to or supplied B battery H.A.C. of the 19th Bgde RHA. On leaving Palastine (for France) his transport ship "Leasowe Castle" was topedoed & sunk 27/05/1918, 100 m W of N from Alexandria. He was rescued after ca.7 hrs in the water by a French hospital ship. Can anyone help with any info/photos re this (or similar) ammunition column ? Can anyone help re the sinking of the Leasowe Castle ? Does anyone have relatives who knew him ? Advice would be greatly appreciated as the family is trying to trace his history You may also e-mail me, if you prefer stroudolesen@chello.nl
