I cannot speak about the brumbies but in New Zealand we have our own "Brumbies".
Our wild horses are called The Kiamanawa (kai-man-a-wa)Horses. The Kaimanawa Ranges is a rugged area of the Central North Island of New Zealand and the Army has a large camp in the southern regions of the ranges. I believe that when the New Zealand Mounted Rifles was disbanded some horses were simply let loose into the wild hills near the camp and over the subsequent years have lived a great and wounderful life in them thar hills. (Its a really really wild and beautiful place where they live. No sight of humans for miles and months.) Anyhow to cut a long story short, they have increased to the point that the goverment decided to firstly cull and then subsequently capture and sell them to horse owners the following link refers
