David,

Light Horse training regiments were formed in Mar 1916 (the 4th LHTR was formed in Feb 1917) from the large number of light horse reinforcements arriving in Egypt.

Each LH Bde formed there own Reserve Regiment or Training Regiment and there were four. As a LH reinf arrived in Egypt, the men never went straight to their regiments but into these training units and were alloc to the regiments from there or the men may have go to any unit which needed a replacement.

Hence if you embarked with the 14th Reinf 1st LHR you ended up in the 1st LHTR and to a unit in the ist LH Bde eg; 1st LH MGS without possibly ever arriving at the 1st LHR in the field.

In early 1916 these Training regiments were over flowing and three double Sqns were raised to handle them, one per LH Bde then in formation as the 4th LH Bde was'nt reraised till Feb 1917. These were a training formation and formed around May 1916. These finished between September and November 1916 when most went to the 4th Camel Regiment. The remainder of the men went to the reforming 4th LH Bde in Feb 1917.

In July 1918 the training regiments were disbanded and the Anzac Training Regiment and the Australian Training regiment were formed.
