My Great Uncle, though an Englishman, was in Australia when WWI began, and joined the 10th Light Horse. His name was Phillip Williams.

His letters home were all preserved, and make fascinating reading. He is also mentioned in an account of a raid on a Turkish trench which was published in a Western Australian newspaper.

I would be interested to know more of the historical background.

After being withdrawn from Gallipoli to Egypt, being eager for action, he stowed aboard a troopship carrying the 16th Battalion AIF to France. He was permitted to join this unit, and served as a scout until killed at Mouquet Farm.

Anything of interest?
