This is where the whole thing becomes absurd, because copyright is supposed to expire after 75 years (with the exception of government records), so even if it applied to diaries in the first place - which in most cases would be doubtful - it wouldn`t apply now. Yet for photos, they seem to be claiming that there is no time limit. That`s why I asked whether such things have ever been tested in the courts. I doubt that they have, and I`d like to think that, if it were ever tested, the AWM (and SLNSW) would be found to have no case.
