I doubt that the book could have been stolen from the AWM. You must remember the 'old' research centre. It was guarded like Fort Knox. An ex-soldier security guard sat just inside the entrance (the back door of the memorial) and you had to sign in, be isssued with a pass, and have everything with you inspected. On leaving they again checked what you had with you. The reasons Steve Becker quotes as having been given him by the AWM still do not justify them claiming 'copyright' on items not originally their own. Just because I might have some photos in my possession does not automatically mean I hold the copyright on them. The AWM has no stronger rights than any individual when it comes to such matters and no stronger claim on copyright just because they are responsible for 'looking after' these photos. That, after all, is their whole purpose, right? To preserve the nation's military heritage. It's ludicrous for them to claim that they should be paid extra for doing the job they're supposed to be doing anyway, especially when they're a government-run institution funded by taxpayers.
