The simplest explanation of genuine saddles is that the 1902 patt is called a fixed tree and the 1912 patt is called a swivel tree. There are very few swivel tree reproductions (although keith Dudley in Melbourne made some i believe. The simplest way to identify a 1902 patt fixed tree is to look at the front centre face of the front steel arch, in the gap between the webbing and leather. In this location is a large letter embossed in the steel ( about 1/2" high). The letters are L, M and S, indicating Large medium and small arch sizes. large is the most usable. medium and small require horses with narrow withers and backs
