My 3rdggfather, John James Russell, served in the Volunteer Southern Rifles, based in Melbourne, Victoria, from approx. 1863 through 1881. I have a small record of his service, including how much he was paid. He was noted as a fine horseman. However, I can find nothing of this unit in any military records. Can someone help me identify it? I do have a picture of John James Russell in his uniform, so could describe that if it would be helpful. thank you. Glenys
