Jeremy: Every reference to the Charge at Beersheba puts the number of men at 800. If you can find a copy, Ian Jones' book on the Light Horse for the TIME-LIFE AUSTRALIA war series is excellent. The late Elyne Mitchell (General Chauvel's eldest daughter) wrote a fine book on the LH too. While the late Charles Chauvel's 1940 black & white film "40,000 Horsemen" covered other battles, I wonder why he picked on that number for his title? Simon Wincer"s 1987 film portrays the charge very accurately. While war artist George Lambert's famous painting tends to give a rather more dramatic moment in the action. A fine print can be had from the Australian War Museum. Sincerely, John.
