Next of Kin Wanted
Next of Kin Wanted
A small advertisement appeared in the Brisbane Courier on 1 January 1920 asking Next of Kin Wanted by the Department of Defence. The notice read:

The military authorities desire the next of kin of the following soldiers to communicate with the Officer in Charge, Base Records, Melbourne, at the earliest possible moment.

The following names were listed:

Captain William Hildrige Armstrong MACDONNELL
Captain Dugald Maxwell Lockwood GRAHAM
1973 Private Charles Napier MORTON
1894 Private Walter Vivian ELLIOTT
2152 Private Joseph GRANT
5074 Private John DOYLE
732 Private Alfonso Juan Stewart ISBEL
6522 Driver Charles Guy KELLY
76A Gunner Arthur Edward LLOYD
58113 Private David Sunley JOPLING

On reflection we ask ourselves: Who were these men and what happened to their next of kin?

This album will try to unravel the story.

Dear Sir,

A notice has appeared in the local Press requesting the next-of-kin of certain persons to communicate with you at the earliest possible moment. Amongst the persons named is the late Captain William Hildrige Armstrong MACDONNELL. Captain MacDonnell appointed his father, Lieut-Colonel Lucius Gerald Armstrong MacDonnell M.D., sole executor of his will. Lieut.Colonel MacDonnell is absent from Queensland - he is at present in France - but I am his attorney under a very full Power of Attorney. I shall be obliged if you will let me know for what purpose you wish captain MacDonnell's next-of-kin to communicate with you.

Yours faithfully,
JG McGregor
