The following entries are extracted and transcribed from the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, the originals of which are held by the Australian War Memorial. There are 366 entries on this site. Each day has entries as they occurred from 1914 to 1919. In addition to the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, when appropriate, entries from the 3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary and other regiments with the Brigade will also appear. Entries from the unit history, Darley, TH, With the Ninth Light Horse in the Great War, Adelaide, Hassell Press, 1924 will also appear from time to time. The aim is to give the broadest context to the story and allow the reader to follow the day to day activities of the regiment. If a relative happened to have served in the regiment during the Great War, then this provides a general framework in which the individual story may be told.

9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Broadmeadows Camp, Victoria.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Formation and organisation of Regiment. Concentration at Broadmeadows, Victoria.

1915

Thursday, November 25, 1915
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Rhododendron Spur
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - The Brigade office has asked for more returns to be rendered this week than at any other period. One showing the number of absentees, sets out that 500 odd Officers and Other Ranks are at present absent from the Regiment.

1916

Saturday, November 25, 1916
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Bir el Salmana.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Siekmann, Major TA; Bleechmore, Captain C; Nelson, Lieutenant AH; Pender, Lieutenant WS; and, Burkinshaw, Lieutenant HO, left for the third course at Cavalry School. Brigade moved out at 1000. Halted at Bir el Salmana for lunch and reached Bir el Moseifig at 1515 - for the night.

1917

Sunday, November 25, 1917
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - El Mejdel.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Two Other Ranks marched in from Moascar. Three Other Ranks from 10th Light Horse Brigade attached for rations.

1918

Monday, November 25, 1918
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Mejdelaya, Tripoli
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - 1000 to 1100 Dismounted Swordsmanship. Darley, Major TH; and, one other rank proceed overland to Egypt to purchase Christmas stores for Regiment. Interpreter Hafez, Mohamed, left on seven days leave in Egypt. Luxmoore, Captain EM, detailed as Divisional Watering Officer.

1919

Tuesday, November 25, 1919
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Adelaide
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Regiment disbanded.
