The following entries are extracted and transcribed from the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, the originals of which are held by the Australian War Memorial. There are 366 entries on this site. Each day has entries as they occurred from 1914 to 1919. In addition to the 9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary, when appropriate, entries from the 3rd Light Horse Brigade War Diary and other regiments with the Brigade will also appear. Entries from the unit history, Darley, TH, With the Ninth Light Horse in the Great War, Adelaide, Hassell Press, 1924 will also appear from time to time. The aim is to give the broadest context to the story and allow the reader to follow the day to day activities of the regiment. If a relative happened to have served in the regiment during the Great War, then this provides a general framework in which the individual story may be told.

Saturday, November 28, 1914
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Broadmeadows Camp, Victoria.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Organising, training and equipping of troops.

1915

Sunday, November 28, 1915
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Rhododendron Spur
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Commanding Officer received instructions to proceed to Mudros at 0600 to take command of the Brigade Rest Party there vice Captain Kidd sick. Went to wharf but boat did not sail. 1100 835 Private Baker, C Squadron was shot in the head this morning while observing. Died before leaving lines. Snow covers the ground everywhere. All tracks are impassable for mule transport. Fatigue parties are carrying rations and water. Six cases of rum stolen last night from Brigade dump. Enquiry proceeding. The coldest and most trying day up to date.

1916

Tuesday, November 28, 1916
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Bir el Malha
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Details of Duties to be performed by B Squadron at Bir el Kasseiba. Patrols to meet observation patrols at Hill 316 and patrol of Imperial Camel Corps from Gensi. Squadron to be responsible for its own protection.

1917

Wednesday, November 28, 1917
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Khirbit Deiran.
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Reorganising preparatory for dismounted work in the hills. At 1900 Ayliffe, Lieutenant SH; and, 25 Other Ranks detailed for relay post duty between General Headquarters and Desert Mounted Corps Headquarters. At 2300 orders received to saddle up and act as advanced guard to 3rd Light Horse Brigade moving north east. Moved at 2400. B and C Squadrons supplied the advanced guard.

1918

Thursday, November 28, 1918
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Mejdelaya, Tripoli
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Regimental Officers Mess reopened.

1919

Friday, November 28, 1919
9th Light Horse Regiment Location - Adelaide
9th Light Horse Regiment War Diary - Regiment disbanded.
