Obituary:	"Sergeant William Henry Hawkins, who has been killed in action, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Hawkins, of Archhill. He was born in Auckland in 1877. Prior to enlisting he was on the staff of Messrs. Winstone, Ltd., for 18 years. For a long period he was a Sunday-school teacher, and for many years a member of the Pitt Street Methodist Choir. He was an active member of the West End Rowing Club and Auckland Mounted Rifles. He leaves a widow and young daughter. A younger brother is now in camp." (Auckland Weekly News, 6 December 1917, p. 19) Sergeant William Henry Hawkins, killed in action, was the eldest son of Mr. P. Y. [sic] Hawkins, of Archhill. He was born in Auckland in 1877, and at the time of his enlistment in March, 1916, he had been in the employ of Messrs. Winstone, Limited, for a period of 18 years. He was an active member of the West End Rowing Club. As a territorial he was a member of the Auckland Mounted Rifles, and whilst in camp he attained the rank of sergeant-major. He leave[s] a widow and one child. (Auckland Weekly News, 6 December 1917, p. 19)

Biographical Notes:	Son of Paul Joseph and Ann Hawkins, of Arch Hill, Auckland. Husband of Francis Hawkins, of 3 Mackelvie, Street, Grey Lynn, Auckland. Brother of Joseph Francis Hawkins (64503), who was killed in action on 8 October 1918, in France.
