HMAT A53 Itria 

 

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 2nd Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A53 Itria 9 February 1915.

The HMAT A53 Itria weighed 5,318 tons with an average cruise speed of 10 knots or 18.52 kmph. It was owned by the British India SN Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 17 June 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier;

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

710 Private James Herbert BOWEN, a 34 year old Slaughterman from Sth Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 7 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 August 1917.

Lieutenant Eric Ewart Gladstone BOYD, a 21 year old Under graduate from Mt Morgan, Queensland. He enlisted on 23 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 September 1917.

728 Private Frederick John BRISCOE, a 27 year old Boundary rider from Limpinwood, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 19 February 1919.

723 Private Ernest Rupert BUTLER, a 22 year old Farmer from Comdale, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 December 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 16 May 1915, and subsequently was buried at sea.

 

750 Private Sydney Herbert CARROLL, a 24 year old Stockman from Charleville, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 1 May 1919.

707 Private Archer Ernest CLARK, a 28 year old Engine driver from Townsville, Queensland. He enlisted on 7 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 20 October 1915.

749 Private Edward Blakeley CLARK, a 35 year old Stockman from Longreach, Queensland. He enlisted on 4 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 22 January 1917.

745 Private John Neville COCHRANE, a 22 year old Painter from Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 December 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 20 July 1915.

747 Private Charles William COLLINS, a 20 year old Farm hand from Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 27 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 25 September 1919.

727 Private Thomas Hubert COLLINS, a 24 year old Bushman from Ballina, New South Wales. He enlisted on 5 December 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 24 June 1916.

 

732 Private Osmond Cyril DELFENDAHL, a 19 year old Farmer from St Peters, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 19 August 1919.

735 Private George Thomas DURHAM, a 28 year old Labourer from Mt Bottle, Queensland. He enlisted on 10 December 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 31 October 1917.

741 Private John Francis DWYER, a 41 year old Labourer from Cunnamulla, Queensland. He enlisted on 2 November 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 7 August 1915.

 

805 Private Herbert Victor Valentine ELLIS, a 19 year old Coach trimmer from Gundarimba, New South Wales. He enlisted on 14 January 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 22 October 1918.

 

703A Private Leslie Bunbury Lousaine FORREST, a 21 year old Labourer from Miles, Queensland. He enlisted on 24 November 1914; and subsequently was Discharged in Britain, 1 March 1919.

 

708 Private Roy Albert GOLDRING, a 22 year old Stockman from North Ward, Queensland. He enlisted on 7 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 19 May 1919.

745 Acting Corporal S. Edward GORDON, a 22 year old Painter from Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted on 3 December 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 20 July 1915.

 

808 Private Richard Hume HOGG, a 22 year old Farmer from Geraldine, Queensland. He enlisted on 19 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors. The information on this site is freely available for private research use only and if used as such, should be appropriately acknowledged. To assist in this process, each item has a citation attached at the bottom for referencing purposes.
