HMAT A17 Port Lincoln

 

3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, Headquarters Section, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln 20 October 1914.

The HMAT A17 Port Lincoln weighed 7,243 tons with an average cruise speed of 12 knots or 22.22 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 26 September 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

108 Private Norman BEAMES, a 22 year old Farm Hand from Two Wells, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 August 1915.

315 Private Harold Morgan BIDMEADE, a 33 year old Rail worker from Kensington, Victoria. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 March 1917.

15 Private William Belworthy BLUE, a 34 year old Wool traveller from North Adelaide . He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 13 October 1915.

19 Private George BRYANT, a 22 year old Traveller from Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 December 1915.

522 Private Thomas Arnold BUTLER, a 24 year old Iron worker from Port Pirie West, South Australia. He enlisted on 14 September 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 February 1915.

11 Private Herbert Major BUTT, a 32 year old Rail Porter from Wasleys, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 13 December 1918.

 

314 Corporal Keith CATCHLOVE, a 21 year old Clerk from Mitcham, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 12 May 1919.

14 Private Alfred John CHERRY, a 21 year old Driver from Marryatville, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 July 1919.

7 Sergeant Signaller Frederick Walter COXALL, a 38 year old Soldier / A&I staff from Nailsworth, South Australia. He enlisted on 29 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 15 November 1918.

9 Saddler Alexander James CRAFTER, a 32 year old Saddler from Balaklava, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 July 1917.

 

18 Private Claude D'ARCY, a 26 year old Clerk from Port Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 3 February 1915.

Lt/QM Oliver Leopold DAVEY, a 31 year old Mining Surveyor from Broken Hill, New South Wales Moonta Mines, South Australia. He enlisted on 21 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 27 April 1917.

 

8 Farrier Quartermaster Sergeant Thomas Benjamin EDWARDS, a 35 year old Farrier Painter from East Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 July 1917.

37 Private Reginald Bennett EVANS, a 30 year old Horse breaker from Parkside, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 30 November 1915.

34 Private Arthur Stanley FROST, a 27 year old Gardener from Walkerville, South Australia. He enlisted on 24 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 28 July 1915.

316 Private Arthur George FRY, a 19 year old Rail worker from Norwood, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 30 August 1918.

Major David FULTON, a 32 year old Estate agent from North Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted on 20 August 1914; and subsequently was Discharged in Egypt, 1 August 1920.

 

5 Bugler Sergeant Horace Henry HANNAM, a 31 year old Boilermaker from Gawler, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 18 October 1915.

Lieutenant Colonel Frank Milton ROWELL, a 38 year old Civil servant from Lockleys, South Australia. He enlisted on 19 August 1914; and subsequently Died of Disease, 8 August 1915, and subsequently was buried at sea.

35 Private Cyril Inskip WILSON, an 18 year old Tile layer from Torrensville, South Australia. He enlisted on 25 August 1914; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 12 July 1918.

22 Driver Richard Ray WOON, a 23 year old Butcher from Loxton, South Australia. He enlisted on 28 August 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 29 April 1919.
