HMAT A57 Malakuta

 

5th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 5th Reinforcements, embarked from Newcastle, New South Wales on board HMAT A57 Malakuta 17 May 1915.

The HMAT A57 Malakuta weighed 7,430 tons with an average cruise speed of 12 knots or 22.22 kmph. It was owned by the T & J Brocklebank Ltd, Liverpool, and leased by the Commonwealth until 24 January 1917.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier;

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

Lieutenant Henry Samuel BROWN, a 51 year old Grazier from Mulgowie via Laidley, Queensland. He enlisted on 19 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 11 July 1917.

927 Private George BUCHANAN, a 37 year old Selector from Loonda, Victoria. He enlisted on 22 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 21 March 1919.

930 Private Patrick BURKE, a 21 year old Station hand from Bundarra, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 27 June 1919.

991 Private Gladstone William BYRNE, a 27 year old Station hand from Bushy Park, New South Wales. He enlisted on 11 January 1915; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 30 September 1917.

 

940 Signaller Joseph John CALLANAN, a 30 year old Telegraphist / Labourer from Sandgate, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 1 January 1919.

933 Private Harry Westropp CAMERON, a 25 year old Selector from East Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 29 December 1914; and subsequently was Killed in Action, 28 July 1918.

983 Private Patrick CANNAVAN, a 21 year old Miner from Home Hill Ayr, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 25 September 1919.

993 Private Thomas Francis CANNAVAN, a 29 year old Miner from Home Hill Ayr, Queensland. He enlisted on 19 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

938 Private Herbert CARD, a 29 year old Storekeeper from Ayr, Queensland. He enlisted on 17 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 28 June 1919.

934 Private Charles CLARKE, a 25 year old Labourer from North Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 28 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

986 Private James Timothy CONNELL, a 26 year old Horse breaker from Temple Court, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 21 March 1919.

980 Private John Morris CONNOLLY, a 28 year old Grocer from Townsville, Queensland. He enlisted on 14 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 21 March 1919.

987 Private Samuel COOK, a 27 year old Labourer from Atherton, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 January 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 14 November 1915.

937 Private Bob Thompson COWLISHAW, a 26 year old Station hand from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 21 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 March 1918.

979 Private Leo COWLISHAW, a 24 year old Station hand from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 26 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 31 October 1917.

 

981 Private Darcy Fraser DAY, a 34 year old Station Manager from Campbelltown, New South Wales. He enlisted on 22 January 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 November 1919.

 

942 Private William John FRANCIS, a 21 year old Labourer from Peachester, Queensland. He enlisted on 27 December 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 16 March 1919.

941 Acting Corporal Harold Livingstone FRASER, a 24 year old Overseer from Emu Park, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 January 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 30 July 1918.

A note on copyright

The Australian Light Horse Studies Centre is a not for profit and non profit group whose sole aim is to write the early history of the Australian Light Horse from 1900 - 1920. It is privately funded and the information is provided by the individuals within the group and while permission for the use of the material has been given for this site for these items by various donors, the residual and actual copyright for these items, should there be any, resides exclusively with the donors. The information on this site is freely available for private research use only and if used as such, should be appropriately acknowledged. To assist in this process, each item has a citation attached at the bottom for referencing purposes.
