SS Hawkes Bay

 

9th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 11th Reinforcement Hawkes Bay Group, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board SS Hawkes Bay 21 October 1915.

The SS Hawkes Bay was built at Sunderland in 1891 and weighed 4,583 tons. It was owned by the TYSER LINE (G.D.TYSER & CO.)

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1326 Private Donald BALFOUR, a 21 year old Labourer from Bairnsdale, Victoria. He enlisted on 9 October 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 8 November 1918.

1312 Private William Tulloch BELFRAGE, a 29 year old Labourer from Woodleigh, Victoria. He enlisted on 17 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 22 January 1917.

1313 Private Charles Ignatius BIGGS, a 22 year old Grocer from Yarram, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 8 September 1919.

1314 Private Edgar Percy BIGGS, a 22 year old Labourer from Clyde, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 22 December 1918.

1315 Private James George BIRD, a 19 year old Butcher from Yarram, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 March 1919.

1363 Private William BONDEN, a 22 year old Station hand from Franklin, South Australia. He enlisted on 2 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 11 July 1917.

1361 Private Roderick Lindsay Donald BONNAR, a 23 year old Bank Accountant from Roselyn Park, South Australia. He enlisted on 23 July 1915; and subsequently Died of accident, 7 August 1917.

1343 Private Frederick Charles BRIGGS, a 32 year old Painter from South Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 10 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 28 January 1916.

1346 Private Frederick BROWNE, a 20 year old Farrier from Parramatta, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 August 1914; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 16 March 1919.

 

1328 Private Leslie Archibald Carser CHAPMAN, a 24 year old Grazier from Colac, Victoria. He enlisted on 14 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1317 Private William Arthur COLE, a 32 year old Grocer from Traralgon, Victoria. He enlisted on 3 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 September 1919.

1327 Private Leslie Roy COLLYER, a 21 year old Labourer from Beyal, Victoria. He enlisted on 23 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 4 March 1919.

1318 Private Alfred CORK, a 21 year old Labourer from Fyansford via Geelong, Victoria. He enlisted on 26 July 1915; and subsequently was Killed in action, 19 April 1917.

1319 Private Ernest Edward CORK, a 30 year old Labourer from Fyansford, Victoria. He enlisted on 26 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 17 July 1919.

1320 Private William John COTTELL, a 23 year old Baker from Carlton, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 August 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 December 1918.

1329 Private Robert Henry CROSS, a 19 year old Miner from Bowna, New South Wales. He enlisted on 10 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 27 August 1917.

 

1330 Private Frederick Charles DAVIES, an 18 year old Labourer from Apollo Bay, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 30 April 1919.

 

1321 Private George Ernest GILBERT, a 29 year old Farmer from Yering, Victoria. He enlisted on 21 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 25 December 1918.

1333 Private David GRAY, a 32 year old Seaman from South Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 13 October 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 9 February 1916.

1335 Private George HUTCHINSON, an 18 year old Labourer from Albert Park, Victoria. He enlisted on 15 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.

 

1345 Sergeant Albert John JENKINS, a 22 year old Clerk from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 September 1915; but failed to re-embark at Fremantle and subsequently Discharged in Australia, 22 December 1915.

 

1358 Private Alfred LAWTON, a 19 year old Engineer from Cororooke, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 July 1915; and subsequently Died of wounds, 22 April 1917.
