SS Port Darwin

 

Australian Light Horse, AIF, Light Horse, February 1918 Reinforcement, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board SS Port Darwin 30 April 1918.

The SS Port Darwin was built in 1918 and weighed 8,179 tons with an average cruise speed of 16 knots or 29.63 kmph. It was owned by the Commonwealth & Dominion Line, and manned by Australian officers and mainly by Australian crews. The Port Darwin was scrapped in 1948.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 10 July 1919

4602 Private John Nicolas ARCHER, a 34 year old Pastoralist from Llewellyn, Tasmania. He enlisted on 7 September 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919

4603 Private George ARTHUR, a 34 year old Farmer from Longford, Tasmania. He enlisted on 7 September 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 17 July 1919

 

4471 Private Alfred Francis John BALDING, a 23 year old Horse driver from North Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919

4436 Private Frank Hawthorne BATE, a 27 year old Policeman from Yangan, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 11th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 20 July 1919

4604 Private Reginald James BECKETT, an 18 year old Clerk from Melbourne, Victoria. He enlisted on 19 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 4th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 17 July 1919

4611 Private Arthur BELL, a 28 year old Farmer from Moe, Victoria. He enlisted on 10 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 8th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919

4605 Private Ernest BELLETTE, a 34 year old Driver from Hobart, Tasmania. He enlisted on 10 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 5th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 2 August 1919

4461 Sergeant John Wilson BENNETT, a 35 year old Soldier/ A&I staff from Manly, New South Wales. He enlisted on 26 March 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the AIF HQ Egypt; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 17 July 1919

4563 Private Ernest BLANCH, a 23 year old Milk hand from Port Stephens, New South Wales. He enlisted on 11 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919

4475 Private Joseph BOOTH, a 39 year old Labourer from Dundas, New South Wales. He enlisted on 29 May 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919

4469 Private John Wilson Wheeler BREARLEY, a 19 year old Carrier from Redfern, New South Wales. He enlisted on 14 December 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 7th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 7 June 1919

4607 Private John Joseph BRITT, a 29 year old Labourer from Richmond, Victoria. He enlisted on 12 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Field Squadron Engineers; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 26 December 1918

4491 Private James Campbell Duff BRODIE, a 19 year old Station hand from Quirindi, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 January 1918. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 6th Light Horse Regiment; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 23 December 1918

4468 Private Clarence Hessel BROWN, a 32 year old Dairy farmer from Burwood, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 September 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 14th Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 24 July 1919

4608 Private John BROWN, a 22 year old Labourer from Portland, Victoria. He enlisted on 25 October 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 May 1919

4474 Private John Michael BRUCE, a 20 year old Porter from Wellington, New South Wales. He enlisted on 17 November 1917. After embarkation and arrival in Egypt where he underwent additional training, he was allotted to the 1st Light Horse Regiment; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919

4610 Private George Richmond BRUCE, a 39 year old Stock dealer from Longwarry, Victoria. He enlisted on 11 December 1917.
