In 1911, Lieutenant-Colonel P. L. Murray, produced a marvellous Boer War reference detailing all the contingents sent from Australia to South Africa, giving a brief history of the formation and finally, listing all the soldiers who saw service in South Africa with that unit. The book was called, Official Records of the Australian Military Contingents to the War in South Africa. It is now the standard reference and starting place for any person interested in pursuing information about Australian involvement in the Boer War.

This Regiment was formed from the Squadrons along the coastal region south of Sydney. From the 1st Light Horse Regiment, the 3rd and 5th Squadrons were added to 2nd Light Horse Regiment's 6th Squadron making the new 28th Light Horse Regiment. In 1921, the 28th Light Horse Regiment was joined to the 6th Light Horse Regiment becoming the 21st Light Horse Regiment. In 1929 it was linked to the 1st Light Horse Regiment to become 1/21st LHR and thus, as a unit ceased to exist.

The Roll of Honour contains the names of all the men known to have served at one time with the 5th South Australian Imperial Bushmen and gave their lives in service of Australia, whether as part of the 5th South Australian Imperial Bushmen or another unit during the Boer War.
