"At a mile distant their thousand hooves were stuttering thunder, coming at a rate that frightened a man - they were an awe inspiring sight, galloping through the red haze - knee to knee and horse to horse - the dying sun glinting on bayonet points..." Trooper Ion Idriess

History:

Extracted from  RK Peacock, Evolution of Australian Light Horse Regiments 1841-1935, p. 8.

This regiment sprung from the Victorian Mounted Rifles a volunteer unit raised i 1885. Detachments existed at Euroa, Longwood, Violet Town, Benalla, Thoona, Wangaratta, Rutherglen and Beechworth and formed part of the 1st Battalion Victorian Mounted Rifles until 1901. During the Federal organisation of 1903, these detachments were formed into a separate unit style 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles). The regiment continued under this title until 1912 when four squadrons of the 8th were designated the 16th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles). In the following year, 1913, it became the 16th (Indi) Light Horse, reverting to the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in 1918, this was later altered to 8th Light Horse Regiment (Indi Light Horse).

Allied with: King Edward's Horse (The King's Overseas Dominions Regiment).

History:

Extracted from RK Peacock, Evolution of Australian Light Horse Regiments 1841-1935, p. 20.

The regiment may claim to have sprung from the Victorian Mounted Rifles, a volunteer organisation dated from 1885. In 1891, the Victorian Mounted Rifles was organised in two Battalions, the 1st having its headquarters at Melbourne with "A" to "F" Companies, composted of detachments hailing from Broadford, Yea, Avdnel, Cathkin, Mansfield, Murchison, Rushworth and Shepparton. The Federal re-organisation of 1903 these detachments were formed into the 7th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles) a designation it held until 1912 when 4 squadrons of the 7th became the 15th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles). As such its title remained until 1921 when it was styled the 20th Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles).

Loyal Till Death

 South Africa 1899 - 1902

Allied with: King Edward's Horse (The King's Overseas Dominions Regiment).

History:

Extracted from RK Peacock, Evolution of Australian Light Horse Regiments 1841-1935, p. 13.

The Present regiment sprung from the Melbourne (Metropolitan) and the Southern (Dandanong) troops of the Royal Volunteer Cavalry Regiment raised in 1862. Through the years 1863 to 1874, these troops formed part of the Prince of Wales Regiment of Light Horse (Hussars). On the formation of the Victorian Mounted Rifles the Melbourne and Dandanong troops, although not identical, became identified with that organization, and carried on as such till 1903.

On the Federal re-organization of 1903, the Sale, Moe, Thorpdale and Warragul detachments of the Victorian Mounted Rifles, together with the Sale, Stratford, Rosedale, Cowwarr, Morwell, Wairagul Drouin and Dandenong detachments of the Victorian Rangers were formed into a mounted regiment and styled 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles) with numbers 1 to 4 Squadrons. This regiment in 1903 had an additional squadron attached known as the No. 5 Squadron raised from the Melbourne, Pakenham and Lilydale detachments of the Victorian Mounted Rifles. Also attached as No. 6 Squadron was a squadron of mounted men formed from a volunteer unit raised in 1900 and known as the Melbourne Cavalry.

In 1912, the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment and the attached squadrons united and all became the 13th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles). During 1913 the territorial title was allotted to it and the regiment became the 13th (Gippsland) Light Horse it continued as such until the year 1921 when the 13th together with part of the 2/3rd Pioneer Regiment were formed into the 13th Light Horse Regiment ( Gippsland Light Horse).

1903 Reorganisation, Victoria

The Sale, Stratford. Rosedale, Cowwarr, Dandenong, Morwell, Warragul, and Drouin Detachments of Victorian Rangers, together with the Sale, Moe, Thorpdale, and Warragul Detachments of Victorian Mounted Rifles, to be formed into the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles). The Melbourne, Pakenham, and Lilydale Detachments of Victorian Mounted Rifles to be formed into one squadron of Australian Light Horse, and attached to the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles).

History:

Extracted from RK Peacock, Evolution of Australian Light Horse Regiments 1841-1935, p. 4:

This regiment may claim to have sprung from the Victorian Mounted Rifles, a Volunteer organisation formed in 1885. During the year 1891, the Victorian Mounted Rifles. were formed into the 1st and 2nd. Battalions, and it is from this latter battalion that the 4th. Light Horse Regiment owes its origin. In this year the Headquarters of the battalion was at Ballarat and under its command was "G" to "K" Companies with detachments located at Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh, Clunes, Talbot, Maryborough, Elmore, Hamilton and Wharparilla.

At the Federal re-organization of 1903 the Warrnambool, Woodford, Nirranda, Panmure, Terang, Colac, Camperdown, Branxholme, Hamilton, Dunkeld, Byaduk, Casterton, and Narrawong detachments were formed into a mounted unit styled the 11th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles).

During 1912 part of the 9th regiment and part of the 11th Australian Light Horse Regiment were formed into a separate unit under the nomenclature of 10th. Light Horse. In 1913: the regiment adopted a territorial title and was then known as the 20th (Corangamite) Light Horse. As this it remained until 1918 when it became the 4th (Corangamite) Light Horse.
