Gallipoli Casualties to 30 September 1915
Part 2
The following is a published casualty list suffered by the AIF during the Gallipoli campaign. This list first published in the Commonwealth Military Journal, 1915, is a collation of the various casualty lists which were issued by the Department of Defence during 1915. The list takes in all the casualties that occurred up to 30 September 1915. The casualty list details the names of men by their specific Military District and then by unit.
Australian Wireless Squadron, AIF, 2nd Reinforcement, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A13 Katuna 20 June 1916.
The HMAT A13 Katuna weighed 4,641 tons with an average cruise speed of 11 knots or 20.37 kmph. It was owned by the Ellerman & Bucknall SS Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 10 February 1917.
The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:
14432 Sapper Herbert Victor CANAVAN, a 21 year old Postalworker from Lithgow, New South Wales. He enlisted on 7 February 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 March 1919.
Second Lieutenant Robert CLARK, a 38 39 year old Engineer from Greenwich, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 May 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 26 February 1919.
14434 Sapper Bruce CLEMENTS, a 19 year old Telegraphist from Penrith, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 April 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 March 1919.
14433 Sapper Herbert Bede CODY, a 19 year old Telegraphist from Kogarah, New South Wales. He enlisted on 8 May 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 March 1919.
14456 Sapper Richard CURRIE, a 24 year old Wireless operator from Sth Bathurst, New South Wales. He enlisted on 18 May 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 March 1919.
14441 Driver Edward James DOYLE, a 35 year old Station master from East Greta, New South Wales. He enlisted on 27 March 1916; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 1 March 1917.
14457 Sapper Harold ESPIE, a 26 year old Telegraphist from Hawksburn, Victoria. He enlisted on 30 May 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 March 1919.
14458 Sapper George GILLOW, a 29 year old Electrical Engineer from Malvern, Victoria. He enlisted on 1 June 1916; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 19 December 1918.
14436 Sapper Earle Rupert GILSENAN, a 25 year old Telegraphist from Kurri Kurri, New South Wales. He enlisted on 26 April 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 March 1919.
14439 Driver Francis Robert HALLIDAY, a 21 year old Farmer from Arncliffe, New South Wales. He enlisted on 21 April 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 13 April 1919.
14462 Driver Joseph Freebury KING, a 20 year old mechanic from Hawthorn, Victoria. He enlisted on 27 April 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 March 1919.
14463 Driver Cecil Milton KIRCHUBEL, a 25 year old Clerk from Camberwell, Victoria. He enlisted on 5 June 1916; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 10 April 1918.
14464 Driver Vernon KUGELMANN, a 31 year old Grazier from North Prentice, Victoria. He enlisted on 18 March 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 15 January 1919.
14459 Sapper William James LOFTUS, a 25 year old Telegraphist from Caulfield, Victoria. He enlisted on 2 March 1916; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 13 April 1918.
14465 Driver Irwin Aubrey O'DONNELL, a 21 year old Farmer from Middle Park, Victoria. He enlisted on 6 March 1916; and subsequently was Discharged in India, 5 July 1918.
14438 Driver George James PORTER, a 38 year old Machinist from Cabramatta, New South Wales. He enlisted on 7 February 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 21 May 1919.
14460 Sapper Terence RYAN, a 23 year old Wireless operator from Wodonga, Victoria. He enlisted on 17 April 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 3 October 1918.
14431 Sapper Reginald Regis SHANAHAN, a 24 year old Telegraphist from Singleton, New South Wales. He enlisted on 7 January 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 22 March 1919.
14435 Sapper Alexander Thomas SIMPSON, a 25 year old Telegraphist from Gulargambone, New South Wales. He enlisted on 24 April 1916; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 23 March 1919.
14461 Sapper Willie SWINDELLS, a 35 year old Electrician from West Brunswick, Victoria. He enlisted on 17 March 1916; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 22 January 1917.
