6th Light Horse Regiment, War Diary Account.

 

The following is a transcription of the Account from the War Diary of the 6th Light Horse Regiment detailing its role at the First Battle of Gaza, Palestine, 26 to 27 March 1917.

 

Shunnar, 25 March 1917

Regiment marched out from Shunnar at 0230 and bivouacked at Deir el Belah 1000. Strength marching out 22 Officers, 426 Other Ranks and 519 horses.


Gaza, 26 March 1917

Marched out from Belah to Gaza 0300 with Brigade. 2 Squadrons were in reserve to 5th and 7th Light Horse Regiments north east of Gaza. 3 Troops under Major Cross and 1 Troop with Lieutenant Hardy were detailed to delay enemy reinforcements arriving by beach route. 1 Troops cleared Beit Hanun at 1230. "A" and "B" Squadrons under Major White formed an outpost line at eastern sandhills to beach, a distance of about 4 miles, protecting Brigade from rear.


Deir el Belah 27 March 1917

Left Gaza 2400 and marched in to Belah arriving there 0730 on 27 March 1917, watered and rode out to bivouac about 1 mile from old bivouac, remained here all day and again watered in bivouac for night about 1 mile away in good feed country. No casualties.

HMAT A69 Warilda

 

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 10th Reinforcements, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on board HMAT A69 Warilda 5 October 1915.

The HMAT A69 Warilda weighed 7,713 tons with an average cruise speed of 16 knots or 29.63 kmph. It was owned by the Adelaide SS Co Ltd, Adelaide, and manned by Australian officers and mainly by Australian crews. The Warilda was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine in the English Channel, 3 August 1918.

The ensuing individual soldier's embarkation information contains the following details:

Rank on embarkation;

Full name of the soldier; 

Declared age of the soldier;

The last occupation held;

The last address as a civilian;

Enlistment Date; and,

Fate.

1305 Private Ralph Burton ADAMS, a 20 year old Grocer from Laidley, Queensland. He enlisted on 23 July 1915; and subsequently was Discharged in Britain, 22 May 1919.

1306 Private Sydney Abraham ALDAM, a 21 year old Stockman from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 3 June 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 13 July 1917.

1307 Private Robert ARCHIBALD, a 34 year old Storekeeper from Kangaroo Pt, Queensland. He enlisted on 10 May 1915; and subsequently Died of Disease, 3 February 1916.

 

1308 Private Henry BAILEY, an 18 year old labourer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 8 October 1919.

1310 Private Alfred Hewlett BARLING, a 30 year old Farmer from Warra, Queensland. He enlisted on 18 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 29 April 1919.

1311 Signaller William BARRY, a 19 year old Patternmaker from Kangaroo Pt, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1353 Private Charles Fitzroy BAYLY, a 28 year old Stockman from Glen Innes, New South Wales. He enlisted on 19 April 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 4 July 1919.

1312 Signaller James Stanley BICKFORD, a 25 year old Printer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 14 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 3 July 1919.

1313 Private George Joseph BRIGGS, a 23 year old Farmer from Weatherton, Queensland. He enlisted on 13 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1314 Private John BRISCOE, a 24 year old Labourer from Greta, New South Wales. He enlisted on 2 June 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

 

1315 Private Francis CESARI, a 26 year old Overseer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 11 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 6 July 1919.

1316 Private George CUMMINS, a 24 year old Fireman from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 12 April 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 7 November 1917.

 

1304 Acting Corporal Thomas Stevenson DINSDALE, a 22 year old labourer from Leyton, Queensland. He enlisted on 22 March 1915; and subsequently Died of Wounds, 1 November 1917.

1317 Private Wilfred DRISCOLL, a 22 year old Wool classer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 20 May 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 13 March 1919.

1318 Private Robert DUNCAN, a 19 year old Printer from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 16 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 12 June 1919.

 

1319 Private Walter FORD, a 21 year old Painter from Brisbane, Queensland. He enlisted on 8 July 1915; and subsequently Returned to Australia, 4 December 1915.

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 11th Reinforcements, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A47 Mashobra 4 October 1915.

The HMAT A47 Mashobra weighed 8,174 tons with an average cruise speed of 12.5 knots or 23.15 kmph. It was owned by the British India SN Co Ltd, London, and leased by the Commonwealth until 21 December 1916. The Mashobra was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean, 15 April 1917.

2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 13th Reinforcements, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A36 Boonah 22 January 1916.

The HMAT A36 Boonah weighed 5,926 tons with an average cruise speed of 10.5 knots or 19.44 kmph. The Boonah was previously a captured German vessel called Melbourne. It was manned by Australia officers and crew and transferred to Commonwealth Government Line, 28 March 1918.

1883 Private Ivan LUCAS, an 18 year old Labourer from Toowoomba, Queensland. He enlisted on 15 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 5 March 1919.

1890 Acting Corporal George Alfred MASLEN, a 24 year old Drover from Charleville, Queensland. He enlisted on 19 August 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 9 July 1919.

1896 Private Edward James McDONNELL, a 23 year old Trainer from Yelarbon, Queensland. He enlisted on 7 September 1915; and at the conclusion of the war, Returned to Australia, 5 April 1919.
